St Georges Mushroom?
    #10419398 - 05/29/09 12:13 PM (14 years, 9 months ago)

St Georges Mushroom?

Found in a grassy patch, on its own, in the north of England.  It was white but went yellow in my hand, although the inside doesn't bruise at all.

If this is St Georges Mushroom, I would like to know if it is possible to cultivate it either indoors or outdoors?  I would like an opinion of a trusted identifier if any of you read this.

Okay, I thought you guys might like some more details.  This specimen is about 2.5 inches tall.  Gills white and crowded.  The veil was surprisingly thick, as you can see.  It does have a mealy smell, but I'm not sure if I'm just saying that because I read it.  I'm attmpting to get a spore print right now but I'm wondering if it might be too immature.  Please let me know if there is anything else you would like to know.

I cant really find any cultivation info on that mush but im sure if you tissue clone it and then knock up a bag with what ever you found it growing on it would work.

Cubie, I found it growing on a clump of dried mowed grass in a park, so maybe straw might be a good substrate?  Are you sure it is St Georges Mushroom, because I wouldn't bother trying to cultivate it if it was not edible?

Cubie, I opened up the cap and took a picture, I not sure if you missed it, but it shows the gills although they are immature.  I'm not sure if gills change colour or anything as they mature.  But here it is again.

Just please wait for a trusted identifier before you try to eat it, :tongue2:.

I checked with the identifiers that i know of and seems none are online atm. They will come around soon probably.

Don't worry, I had no intention of eating this one.  As you can see from the bottom of the second pic it looks like the parasites have already had this for lunch!   I'm just curious though, and I wouldn't mind cloning it if it was edible.

It looks like one of the almond smelling Agaricus species. Does it smell like almonds?
I don't think it is St. Georges, they don't have a veil.

The smell has almost gone, but yes it does smell a bit like almond, very faintly.  The veil did trouble me because I didn't see any pics of St. George's with a veil.

Can you be more specific?  Is it edible?  The yellow staining troubles me.  I've heard that this can be a sign of it being poisonous, but it is only the outer surface that yellows, it doesn't yellow when cut.

Yes, it is a choice edible. The toxic, to some people agaricus, also stain yellow, but don't smell like almonds. Agaricus augustus, and A. blazei are a couple of mushrooms that look and smell like the one you found.

Hmmm.  I'm not convinced it is either the species you mentioned.  They both have a brown scaly cap and a scaly stipe, but this one has smooth skin and had an almost white cap when I picked it.  It does look very similar in section to the Agaricus Blazei though as you can see here.  So do you definitly think it is edible?

Go back and look for mature specimens. If it is indeed A. blazei I would be willing to trade for a culture.

I do think it's edible, though the first time I find something I don't eat it. For most mushrooms, I wait till I've found them 5 or 6 times till I eat them.

It's possible that your mushroom is Agaricus arvensis, the staining on your mushroom is pretty strong for arvensis, but it's possible.

Agaricus arvensis, the Horse Mushroom, that's what it is!   I have a little pocket book for identifying mushrooms but I initially overlooked that one because the picture had brown gills, but according to the description on wikipedia they have white gills when they are young.  I think I'm gonna try and see if I can cultivate this now.

Okay, I went back to the same spot and found some more.  I still think it is arvensis, but I'm interested to know what you guys think.  All were found growing in grass under a tree.  Unfortunately I won't be able to eat them because all are infested with maggots.  :frown:

The smell could be described as almond but not quite the same or as strong, but definitely not unpleasant.  Some yellowing of the outer skin, but the flesh inside does not change colour when cut, even at the base of the stem.  It could still possibly be Agaricus silvicola, but I think it is slightly too big and I'm not quite sure how to distinguish between them.

Yeah silvicola, it might be that, I've never seen the kind of red staining as is in this picture,

on arvensis.

How about Agaricus aestivalis?  I've read that this sometimes has brown or reddish stains on the stem.

Does anyone have any information on how to identify Agaricus aestivalis?  This is another possibility I think, but I can't find much info on the web, and most of the info that there is is in Swedish where it appears to be known as the sommarchampinjon (summer mushroom).

Agaricus aestivalis are apparently very similar to A. silvicola, but with distinctly elongated spores http://mushroomhobby.com/Gallery/Agaricus/index.htm.  If only I had a microscope!  I'm still inclined to think it is Arvensis though because the gills go from white through to brown with no pink stage (although arguably one of them does have a very faint pink hue), seems to be slightly bigger than A. silvicola or A. aestivalis, and the veil is fairly thick and has the distinctive cogwheel appearance.
