pinning a monotub
    #10417013 - 05/28/09 11:29 PM (14 years, 9 months ago)

Hi guys so just a question about how to go about initiating fruiting in a monotub.

my friend has a monotub set up to where brf cakes were added to horse manure and hay.  he let them colonize that in the dark, and late cased it with 50peat moss 50 vermiculite.    It's been about a week since casing.

The catch is that this substrate is only about 1 inch deep (excluding casing)

here's what his setup looks like

he has a ceiling fan going at full speed, but it doesnt really do too much, what i'm wondering, is I know monotubs are meant to be kept closed and junk like that, but would it help to take off the lid and fan it a bit? - also, there's been about 18 hours of light a day

the mycelium isnt popping through the casing very much, i kind of expected more, but it doesnt seem too bad to me. - take a look

as of today, there are two pins forming on one side, and just recently another one popped up on the other side, but they are all still < or = 1mm.

Because it's started pinning, im thinking it would be good to FAE so it will hurry up and pin evenly everywhere.

Any comments (or questions)?

I mist and fan monotubs. More FAE is better, plain and simple. A good fanning never killed a monotub.

Thanks man.

I've read i know a couple of times on this site a few people that seemed to be pretty big advocates of NOT fanning a monotub.  I guess what i'm trying to ask is that I know that its designed to not need fanning, but other than drying out and a few contams getting in, is there anything wrong with fanning your monotub a bunch? - I dont see why people say you shouldnt fan it, especially if you mist it.
(its not bad to mist it every once in a while at this stage, right)
