Smelly Shit
    #1041714 - 11/10/02 07:39 PM (21 years, 10 months ago)

Ok, so I decided to pasteurize some horse poo compost. The compost was made by drilling a bunch of holes in the side of a garbage can, then poo and straw were alternately layered up to the top. This was allowed to sit for three weeks, then it was dumped onto a tarp and turned, and put back into the garbage can and allowed to sit for three more weeks. I've used this crap a couple times and I haven't had any odor problems, but today after drying outside last night (it rained, do you think that was the problem) , when I went to spawn some BRF cakes, I smelled the poo and it was horrible. It smelled like human shit. I had intended to spawn 4 small tubs, but only could get through one because it smelled so bad. Now I know that horse poo shouldn't smell bad if it is properly dried, but I didn't think you needed to dry compost because of well, the composting action itself. So why do you think it smelled so bad and do you think this will be detrimental to the one tub I spawned?

Sounds like it was not turned enough. Meaning it anorobicly (I spell like shit) composted. Rather than aerobicly composted.

This leads to that smell. It takes a turning around every 3 days, for the whole garbage can to get enough air, to arobicly compost the whole content. You may have also watered it to much. Which impedes composting.

It getting fall. The cold weather & temp can make a diff. Plus, It might also have been too wet and the rain on it didn't help.

Thank you both very much for responding. I was hoping that my compost was primo, but I guess I have to turn it more and wait. So the shit won't compost as well in the colder temps (I live in northern Florida, it does freeze somewhat frequently, probably starting within the next few weeks) ?

This is what ultra primo mushroom compost looks like. But, this was ran through a chipper/shredder (first). Then, windrowed & mechanicly turned (high speed & sharp tines)with a turner every 3 days. I wish you were in my neck-o-the-woods. I would turn you on to a free wheelbarrow full.

Cold weather impedes small compost piles or cans. With big piles it does not matter as much, as those suckers really heat up.

Don't feel bad. That pic was taken after it was screened & air dried, to get the moisture content down (to impede further composting action). I could have bought a good used car for what it cost to get it togather & done. The chipper/shredder in the beginning made one hell of a BIG diff about end result size consistancy. 6T

Ya, you defiantely have to turn it every couple days or so at the start. Also, you should have a bigger pile, it'll heat up inside and compost better. It does take a few weeks until if becomes a fine consistency like tangos.

But your on the right track, horse manure compost is the way to go for bigger better flushes. I use Blue's Poo from the sporelab, it works great.

As for the smell, it might be ammonia which is bad and will delay colonization and is a result of it not being turned enough.

Its not really amonia, I know what that smells like in poo, I don't know how do describe it any other way that it smelled like a bag of human shit, I've been around a lot of poo, horse, cow, pig, dog, and non of it every smelled as much like human poo as this, wonder if my neighbors were real drunk and decided it would be funny to poo in my poo, bastards.
