how dry should mushrooms be.. before stored with a desiccant?

i've had them in front of a fan for a bit more than 48 hrs...
and the smaller ones are cracker dry.. but the bigger ones are still a bit bendy and (not cracker dry).....
should i wait longer, before storing them in an air tight jar.. with desiccant? should i put some of the smaller ones in for the time being?
(i'm going to put them in a paper bag, inside a jar.. - with a couple silica sachets underneath the bag.. at the bottom of the jar.)

You want them dry enough, that any leftover water can be easily absorbed. So, yeah- cracker dry is best for longer term storage. Also easiest for dosing.

I usually fan dry for about 12 hours for smaller ones and then put thm in a desiccant chamber for 24 hrs or so and then they are cracker dry and I keep them in a ziplock, for the bigger ones you should fan for 24 hrs and it should be good....I put em in with the desiccant even if they are bendy....I'm no expert though but it works for me

thanks..
yeah - humidity is bloody high for U.K currently... other day it was 83%.
so i don't reckon those 'bigguns will fully dry.. i'm gonna store them long term in a jar with a couple packets of desiccant to ensure they are dry..
only worry is that the bag the silica sachets arrived in was slightly open.. so they might already have absorbed some moisture...
so the silica desiccant should finish them off? (they've been fanning for about 55hrs) in my wind tunnel creation.... (big apple box with fan underneath, facing upwards... and mushrooms on a grill at the top)

You might try LOW oven heat. Set it to whatever setting is lowest, put them on a cookie sheet, check every couple of hours.
And go find or make a dehydrator.

well i had my wind tunnel. - which worked to an extent...
you reckon the oven will be ok... lowest is 80c.. (176f) i know there's speculation as to whether heat is degrading.....
is 176f gonna reduce their potency?

176 is a little higher than I'm really comfortable with. Leave the door open a crack, maybe. It's a trade-off, you want to get them dry and packed away from light and air as quickly as you can.

i reckon i'll just take the four/five big ones that are still a bit wet and bang em in the oven for an hour to two.
do you think storing in the freezer is necessary? (considering i've already got 2x 10g silica gel sachets in an airtight jar)
should i just have them in a relatively dark place? i'm trying to find oxygen absorbing sachets.. but i think they might not exist. (in the U.k anyway..)
cheers doc.

I wouldn't put them in the oven. I put mine on top of my DVR and that lil bit of heat drys it to cracker dry in 2 days...If you put em away when they aren't cracker dry they will rot or turn to slime...

For a few months, cracker dry in a baggie is fine. With my long term storage, I vacuum pack them and put in the freezer. Is it necessary? Dunno, but they have kept for a year that way.

alright... i just got them out of the oven. and they are 'dry as a cracker'
i've put them in a jar with leaver to snap it shut (two metal rings and a rubber seal) and they're in there with the silica.....
the oven got quite hot .. i think.. despite me putting it on 80c (i put it lower, but it had no markings below 80c.. so might have been just 80c)
the general consensus is that; it does lower potency.. but not by anything significant, or noticeable.... so i'm guessing they'll be fine?
Edit: what do you use to vacuum pack? if online.. could you post a link.. please. thanks

I use a Foodsaver vacuum machine. You can find them at cookery stores and other places. Kind of expensive, but it's the perfect way to store mushrooms. And a million other things. And you can use it without the vaccuum for things like spawn bags.

I had to laugh at your purchases Don't think you are alone there brother. If I had all the money that I spent on things I didn't need before I knew I didn't need them, I would buy us BOTH a dehydrator.
Now I do a lot of this before I buy ANYTHING. lol.

your mushrooms drink better then I do!

lol... yeah, thought i'd give those guys the respect they deserve... edit: what do you use to water them? (my tap water is hard as fuk)
- the problem was, i did too much reading.. and decided on these elaborate incubated fc's and whatnot....
hey.. it's an (expensive) learning curve..
(on a side note... bottled water increases the female hormone in men - due to the plastic used.) so i stick with tap water (for myself)... : cheap and straight.
