Brain tumour man is jailed over drug use
    #10406106 - 05/27/09 05:17 AM (14 years, 9 months ago)

The Star (Doncaster)

Tuesday 26 May 2009

A YOUNG Doncaster man who smoked up to 20 joints of cannabis a day to relieve the pain of a brain tumour has been jailed for eight months.
Carl Anthony Wynne, aged 25, wept as the judge at Doncaster Crown Court handed down the sentence for supplying the drug to other people to finance his habit.

The court was told he has a slow-growing tumour which is untreatable and will prove fatal
ADVERTISEMENT
. Kath Goddard, defending, said he suffered from extremely bad headaches and occasional seizures but did not intend to play the "cancer card" to get out of jail.

"The only type of drug that worked to relieve the pain of his condition was cannabis and that is why the intake of the drug was so high. Using that amount was expensive so he found that he would supply his friends, who were already users so it is not a case of them being corrupted," said Ms Goddard.

Prosecutor Neil Coxon said police raided Wynne's home on Langdale Road, Carcroft, last November and found more than £180 worth of skunk cannabis in his bedroom, along with dealing materials, and £269 in cash.

He told the officers he was a habitual heavy user of cannabis and sometimes smoked 20 joints a day. Although he had previous convictions for burglary and dishonesty he had no record for drugs offences, said Mr Coxon.

Wynne pleaded guilty to offences of supplying cannabis between March and November 2008 and possessing it with intent to supply.

Ms Goddard said he had made full and frank admissions and did not supply drugs to others every day in that period. Before his tumour was diagnosed he had a long-standing heroin addiction which he had sought treatment for and medication for that meant only cannabis could ease his pain.

Judge Jacqueline Davies told Wynne: "The supply of any kind of drug is serious. This must result in an immediate custodial sentence."

She also confiscated the £269 on behalf of South Yorkshire Police.

huh?  Does she really believe that?

I never got this dispartate treatment in the law.  If the judge is claiming legal reasons then whatever, but I don't see the logical reasons.  It would be less serious for him to smoke the drug then for someone to provide it to him?  huh?

Does she believe the same thing regarding caffeine, prozac, and alcohol?  I mean, this is just nonsense- not even an attempt to provide coherent reasoning.

uh oh, well if it was skunk cannibas then I guess it must be serious, right?

Do they test it for 'skunk' or something?  Or is it just a completely and utterly meaningless label they apply to every cannibas product discovered?

once again another article that has made me feel sick to the guts. a man with cancer. put in jail. for medicating himself. with something that THE GOVERNMENT MAKES NO MONEY OUT OF. when according to the law he shouldve been using some horrible prescription pain killer with even more painful side effects. oh, what a criminal. he deserves to rot in prison for not using heavy prescription opiates or the like. shame on him...

fucking disgrace... the law claims another... not the plant, the law. the plant is still yet to claim one...

Wtf is wrong with people. animals :nonono:

It's amazing that only until this very year did people/mainstream media finally jump on the legalization bandwagon.

Guess you can't really complain too much about living in the states compared to the U.K though... Thousands of video cameras, the gov. talking about remotely searching through peoples computers, no fucking guns or weapons that you can legally purchase, shitty food:lol:, etc

Social conditioning of "All illegal drugs are bad for all people, because its illegal and dangerous" is to blame for this.

I don't really care what jesus what do anyway.  He is just a fictional character like santa claus and the easter bunny.  Anybody who was raised with any kind of decency would know that taking the only drugs that make a sick and dieing person feel better is basically a form of torture or cruel or unusual punishment.

180 British Pounds = 286 dollars, US
269 British Pounds = 427 dollars, US
(approx. -catch me if I'm wrong here)

I dont know how prices match up on the other side of the Atlantic, but in the US, $286 of pot is typically under an ounce. And why would you charge somebody (or even mention) for having $425 in cash?  Sometimes I just cash my paycheck and don't deposit any of it.  Most of it I blow at the bar but it's not unusual for me to have $200 on me.  Shit, I know bartenders that walk home with $500 cash on a good night, $427 stashed in your house is NOTHING.

The social conservatives* who are maintaining our drug laws are way crazier than this guy. They are afraid of changes. All of the good things that happen come from changes. Learning is changing!

If making marijuana or other drugs legal caused some huge problem to start forming than virtually everyone would want to go back to the old way of doing things and we would. It doesn't hurt to try!!!!!!!!! End Rant.

*Social conservatism is a political or moral ideology that believes the government has a role in encouraging or enforcing traditional values or behaviors based on the belief that these are what keep people civilized and decent.
