PSMS Memorial Day Weekend Hunt '09
    #10398756 - 05/25/09 09:35 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

I had a blast this weekend with the Puget Sound Mycological Society hunting morels and camping out with other mushroom nerds like myself.  About 50 or so of us camped out for 3 days around Levenworth, Washington on a friend's property, and had a big pot luck feast to boot.

The weather was perfect and almost everyone found morels, and even some porcini.  It was a cold spring this year, and this year the Verpa's were actually growing with the true morels.  Normally they are several weeks apart, the Verpa's almost always coming up well before the morels.

Sadly, I was so mesmerized by the hunt itself I left my camera in the car for most of it.  However I did snap a few shots here and there:

Some of the local scenery:

A beautiful puffball, perfectly round and symmetrical:

The potluck, and my dog waiting for scraps:

One of the larger morels to be found, about 6-7 inches tall:

The campfire:

The haul:

This was the most successful hunt I've been on, this being the first year I've found anything at all.  The haul was about 4 pounds for just myself, my 3 other hunting buddies probably found another 4-5 pounds between them.  The elevation was between 2800-3500 feet, primarily on the more exposed slopes under Doug fir and Ponderosa pine.  We hunted just north of Leavenworth as well as the Southern slope of Blewitt Pass.  It would be hard to make a living doing this, at the rate I found them I'd earn well below minimum wage.  But damn, I have more morels than I know what to do with!  I already put 3 pounds in the dehydrator, the rest I'll eat fresh over the next couple days.

So far all of you Washington hunters, the goings are good right now, and probably will be well into June this year.

I'm tempted to go to the Swauk hunt, but I might be mushroomed out for a while.  We'll see later in the week.  The boletes were few and far between, I think it hasn't quite warmed up for them yet.  I bet we'll see them coming up soon though.

Beege: Thanks! I'm using an Olympus E-410.  I love it  It's great for macros, and small and portable for an SLR.  The newer versions are coming with built-in image stabilization.

I just cooked a small batch up with butter, garlic, whole milk, and some light spices and just ate them like that.  Last time I made the mistake of diluting the sauce with noodles. Bah!

It seems to better pictures than any other camera.

This foray is really similar to the PiPi valley foray I went on last weekend.  Lots of old timers and a big potluck.

Nice haul.

I went to Mount Rainer today looking for morels and Ganodermas.

I ended up only finding Gyromitra and Fomitopsis.

Blimey, if you're finding Gyromitra, chances are the habitat is right, just a week or two early for morels.  Some of the Gyromitra are edible, Gyromitra giga for one.  I've never tried it, but according to Arora, it's good.

Alan, is the PiPi foray with the MSSF or BAMS?
