Flowhood blowing too hard

I just built a flowhood and I tested it with a lighter. It bends the flame at 90 degrees until I get about 3 inches from the hepa filter itself and its blows the flame out. The closer I get the more erratic the flame gets. Im using an A/C prefilter. My blower is 549 cfm free flow. My hepa is 24x12x5.8 Do I need to use a furnace filter?

Block off the intake with a piece of sheet metal until the flame of the lighter bends over 45 to 90 degrees, but doesn't flicker or blow out. That's the cheap solution. A more expensive solution is a smaller blower or a motor speed controller. For a 1 X 2 flowhood, you want around 250 cfm @ 1" static pressure. RR

Sweet new project!
I remember reading that one needs 100cfm per square foot of filter at a certain static pressure. So if you have 2 square feet, 549cfm might be overkill. Is it posible to rig up a dimmer switch type deal to allow you to play with the airflow?

No. AC motor speed is determined by the frequency of the supply voltage. That's why AC motors in Europe on 50 hz run slightly slower than the same motor in the US would run on 60 hz. They make motor speed controllers, and that's what must be used, or as I said above, block off part of the intake to choke it down. RR

Instead of the sheet metal, Im using computer paper to block off part of the air filter. It seems to be getting better. The flame seems to bend the best at around 2 inches. When I block part off the intake with paper it seems to be too much or too little. I cant seem to get it perfect. How far away from the hepa filter do you check the flame for a 90 degree bend at?

Two to four inches. Laminar flow should extend out around 12 inches though.
Block off the intake itself, not the pre-filter. You want as much pre-filter surface as you can have. That blower is really twice the size you want. I'd suggest a smaller one, or a motor speed controller to slow it down. RR

Minimum flow is 100 fps or 68.18 miles per hour. Here some pics and a video of my adjustments. Im just cautious because I dont want to ruin any petri dishes.
This is about 12 inches away.
 This about 3 inches away.[flash=425,350]

Here I am testing the flowhood with incense smoke and a large shot glass. Got the info from one of Roger Rabbits posts.

Nobody on here has a flowhood and did the smoke test? Im gonna try out some petri dishes on it for the ultimate test.
