Red Bull Cola banned for containing cocaine [Germany]

Red Bull Cola banned for containing cocaine
May 25, 2009 - Austrian Times

Red Bull cola has been taken off the shelves in Germany after food regulators found traces of cocaine in the contents, it emerged today (Mon).

Officials in five German states have banned the fizzy cans - a favourite of clubbers - after tests showed that coca plant leaf extracts in the drinks registered positive for the Class A drug.

Coca leaves are used as a flavouring additive in many drinks and foods but have all the active ingredients of the drug that becomes cocaine removed from them.

But food inspectors in North Rhine-Westphalia, western Germany, discovered traces of the drug in routine food safety tests.

The discovery meant the energy drinks lost their status as food and became subject to the German Narcotics Act.

"The institute examined Red Bull Cola in an elaborate chemical process and found traces of cocaine," said state food safety head Bernhard Kühnle.

Authorities added the cocaine levels do not pose a health threat but are not permitted in foodstuffs.

So far five German states - Hesse, North Rhine Westphalia, Thuringia, Rhineland Palatinate, Lower Saxony - responsible for nearly half the country's population have banned the drink.

But Red Bull insists the cola should go back on the shelves.

"Coca leaf extracts, without the active ingredient of cocaine, are used worldwide for food flavourings and are completely safe," a spokesman told the Frankfurter Neue Presse newspaper.

Interesting.  I doubt it was anything intentional, but don't they perform tests before mass marketing a product meant for consumption?  I can only assume either these tests weren't initially performed when the product was released, or somehow they've gotten sloppy in the alkaloid extraction process.  Where do all those bulk extracted alks end up anyway?

I'm sure the government monitors the shit out of it. I couldn't imagine the hoops a company must go through to even get inactive leaf.

Meanwhile coca cola continues to have shitty decocain-ated coca leaf extract.

If people want to sip cocaine, let them. Certainly less annoying than people snorting it.

There's cocaine on our money, why not in our beverages?

Of course it would be very small traces, nothing more.

That's just a silly comment. Little kids drink colas all the time. I certainly wouldn't want to deal with a little kid hopped up on coke LOL. Imagine how annoying that would be? LOL

My friend's company makes the decocained coke flavoring. He was telling me they literally have a room that is a mountain of near 100% cocaine just sitting there. Oddly enough cocaine is used for eye surgery still and that's where a bulk of legal cocaine gets sold to. Literally there is a volt in one of his companies factories with billions of dollars worth of powder and liquid coke. Pretty nuts to think that something like that is on US soil right now. It's more like something out of scar face. Sadly you can't see said volt on a company tour (how awesome would that be!), actually on the operators are allowed in the room, DEA, FDA, and a couple of government guards are allowed on premise at all times. Not even the company president/founder's grandson is allowed near the building. Crazy drug laws.

My buddy said that even that decocained flavoring still has very trace amounts (very tiny tiny tiny amounts). Legally you just can't go over a certain trace amount (and that amount is tiny). I imagine the germans must have some sort of weird drug laws or strange politicians to freak out over such a minor thing (maybe it's election season over there).

Very off topic but funny none the less. I was at the botanical gardens recently. In one of the green houses they have a "chocolate plant" (that's what they called it) In reality this was obviously a coca plant (seriously how many other plants produce coco/chocolate). Funny thing was that their was bite marks and ripping all over the leaves....LOL you could totally tell people were munching on those leaves to get a buzz going or numb down their mouths.

I was thinking the process of making it was difficult, I hear of people growing coca for personal use, whether they are making cocaine out of it I have no idea.

Sounds like the Germans have gone a bit too far here.

Even the U.S. government understands that just because some extremely minute concentration of something shows up on an extremely sensitive test, it doesn't mean much.  Tap water for example has traces of all kinds of illegal substances in extremely small concentrations.  Are they going to ban water?

In the U.S. you can already buy coca tea in small amounts.  And it contains a lot more coke than Red Bull.

When Coca-cola came out with their coca-cola overdrive or was it c2 or whatever it was (the one that "tastes original") my grandma was the happiest I've ever seen her. She told me"I think that means they're putting real cocaine in there now  "

I just laughed and said maybe.
