    #1039264 - 11/09/02 06:49 PM (14 years, 28 days ago)

Found these on peoples lawn up in North GA. It somewhat have a mushroomy/wood scent to it. When bruised it turns to a light brown color. The spores are black in color. So, what do you guys think it is?? Please help me identify them.

I'm taking a wild guess, is it Weilii strain?

I'd say no, they are not. Sorry dude, they dont look particularly active, but I am a newbie also, and I'm just saying this in the hope that I can dissuade you from getting impatient and eating them without a pro id'ing them. Wait for someone else to say for sure, but I'd say they are almost deifnitely not.

These are non-active mushrooms... definitely NOT a weilii strain. However, i have found it to be a pretty good rule that where those mushrooms show up.... you are probably going to run into Weiliis.

They can be pretty confusing.. i have seen HUGE patches of those mushies and freaked out.. only to take a closer look and become disappointed. Key differences between this mush and the weillii is its textured cap, where as weilii has a smooth, slimy cap that is a bit more reddish brown in color. The stiem doesnt have that hairy-like texture on weiliis and the stems of the weiliis are more white in color, bruising a deep blue purple.

KEEP LOOKING! you are close to finding a VERY VERY potent mushroom. keep your eyes on the neighborhoods from 3-8 years old with clay/bermuda grass (and a few other types of sod/grass) and pine trees. if you need some reference picts, look for my threads on what i have been finding and some other hunters in n. ga.

good luck

PS. once you find a weilii, you cant mistake it anymore.. and the most tell-tale sign is the smell.. its something like cheap lipstick.. very waxy/musty smell... you will know what i mean.

Psyathrella velutina (sp?) I believe. I see those everywhere here in SE TN, and have never found a weilii, hehe.

Psathyrella looks like a reasonable guess, and, of those, Psathyrella velutina would be a good guess.

Happy mushrooming!

Hello Taz Khmer or should i say... What is it with people and not being able to speak english tonight? Your post is so garbled that I have no clue what you intended to say.

Anyway, I'd agree with ToxicMan, they look like , Psathyrella velutina to me. Very common, not active.

Looks like Velvety Psyathrella. They are common in lawns here in Georgia, especially in Weilii patches. When the rain hits, the velvety powder gets washed away, and they become easily mistakable for weilii to the untrained eye.
