SW FL Gulfcoast ID

5/22/09

We found a pie that had a bunch of these little buggers on it. They have a blueish hue to them and are also covered in white fuzz. We've looked at the pie for 2 days and all the mushrooms are very small and impossible to pick with out destroying, so we are waiting it out to see if they get bigger. So far they have gotten to maybe 4 to 5 inches tall, VERY skinny and tiny cap. You can see them dead in the pictures. The weather here has recently been cool and rainy for about a week now, with real hot blasts during the day. Now I'm really new to this but I've been reading that these conditions trigger some good growths. I was thinking that this might just be like an initial build up to a good bloom. weather or not they are active we will have to wait and see what happens.

Has anyone else seen these guys, and do you know what they are?

I will keep thread up to date on what happens with our "pie"!

Habitat:
Found in SW FL cow pasture under trees. growing on cow patties.

Stem:
very small white and fuzzy.
Cap:
very small and fuzzy.

Spore print color:
don't have it yet.

Bruising:
haven't touched them..

its going to be hard to id those, they are pins, and are probably insignificant due to their size anyway. wait for a trusted identifier though.

post a photo taken of them when they are mature, and identification will be a possibility.

i'v only seen cubensis and panaeolus fruits growing off pattie's in that area of Florida.

I forgot the camera so i could not get a pic of them, but i found HUNDEREDS of the same thing but much bigger. They have a blueish-white stalk and a blueish-grey cap. When they are grown, the cap is very thin and flat. The stalk is hollow and extremely fragile, you can hardly look at them without breaking them. When picked water poured out of the stem, a lot of water. We found more of these than anything else in most of the fields we looked at. haven't yet ided them. ill get a pic next time im out. But i think it something that noobs may want to keep in mind; There are other things than cubes and pans on poop here in SWFL.

Sounds like something like Coprinellus nivea.  Definitely coprinoid.

There are maybe a dozen dung species.  I wonder if any of them are poisonous.

Conocybes are pretty frequent in my area (in horse manure anyway)

Those are the ones I wonder about.  Maybe you could do a meixner test.

I did a quick search on meixner test, and i don't think i have the ability to do so. It called for a centrifuge and some reaction chemicals to stain. Is there a low tech way of doing it?

Negative control:

Positive reaction:

The mushrooms in question:

Galerina spores:
