Early birthing
    #1038927 - 11/09/02 01:38 PM (21 years, 4 months ago)

Well I found out why my cakes (pktek) weren't pinning.. the jars were not fully colonized. I realized this AFTER I birthed them and put them into the dual chambered terrarium. I kept a couple contaminated jars in the dark longer than the others for the hell of it, and the mycellium growth was much stronger, so I know now that I should've held off and let the cakes colonize about a week more. That being said, is there anything special I should do now that the cakes are in the terrarium? More light, less light, less humidity? I'm going to start a new batch, but for now, did I mess this batch up for good or is there still hope? Thanks

J

If they are in jars, couldn't you tell by looking at them if they were fully colonized or not?

As long as they're birthed just go ahead and fruit them normally. You should get a few mushies if they don't contam first. Good luck.

no just keep them at optimum temps and humidity and wait....its the hardest part. Its like watching a two week long horse race and you bet all your money on the horse in front. A real nail biter....good luck

What I was saying is when you are looking at them to decide to birth, how do you not realize they are not 100%?

if the inside of cake isn't colonized it would be hard to tell, yeah? is there a way to tell about the inside?

The above is just an illusion.

StS... I looked at them and they were white all around when I birthed them, however the few jars I left in the dark a week longer were MUCH whiter and densely covered then the other jars (could barely see the verm/brown flour, versus the others which were lightly covered in white). I saw white all around and assumed it was time, but I didn't know how white they jars should've been.

Ahh I C. I thought you meant there were still spots with no white at all. That's why its usually recommended to let the jars sit another week or so after 100%.

Magician, as long as the outside is fully colonized, most of the inside should be, but the outside should protect the inside from contams.
