Dark syringe vs. light syringe
    #1038889 - 11/09/02 03:19 PM (15 years, 7 months ago)

What are the advantages? faster growth? better yields? Better chance of germination?

A darker syringe will usually result in faster colonization, but has nothing to do with yields.

I agree with StS. Some people prefer to strech out their darker syringes too. There really is no need for a dark syringe. More spores fighting for the same ammount of substrate is the result. Every dark sytringe I've used has been stretched. Never had any problems.

yup.
I prefer dark syringes. Some light ones result in wetspot bacteria/contam
It sucks doesn't always happen though.
Dark is my preference

If you are doing multispore innoculation then dark syringes are better. The darkness is caused by the spores, which are a deep purple color (in Cubensis). The more spores that mate, the faster your initial growth, and the less time contamination has to move in. Fast initial growth leads to faster colonization times of the jars.

If you are isolating a sector of growth on agar, then dark syringes are not better. You want a very dilute solution with just a few spores. Contamination is easy to see on agar, so you aren't worried about speed here, but rather isolating individual growths.

It really depends on what you are doing.
