Substrate Questions
    #1037988 - 11/09/02 12:02 AM (21 years, 3 months ago)

How's it goin, I'm new to this stuff....I was wondering for the brf cakes if it's possible to use perlite instead of vermiculite, only reason is I've got tons of perlite so I thought I might be able to put some to use, the other question I've got is instead of brf is it possible to use something like corn grit or corn mesa? I've got a crap load of corn flowers and other related products around the house that need to be put to use, what makes brf so great? what's so nutritional about brf compared to other products...well thanks for your time, sorry if any of this has been answered before, I searched the faq and various other sites with growing information and didn't find much of anything to help me out, thanks....

I heard the same thing, but someone told me that using pearlite is bad, and would not work half as well. Pearlite sweats water, and that's why it's good for humidification.. but Vermiculite works in a different way, releasing water slowly.. which is good for cakes and casings. I'm fairly sure that all the water from the pearlite would be evaporated to the top of the jar by the end of the boiling/microwaving/autoclaving process... or it would leak down to the bottom of the jar and form a puddle forcing contamination. That's what I hear, never tried it though. Vermiculite is the same price as pearlite.. although harder to find for some reason. Good luck in your search, and I hope you are enjoying growing mushrooms as much as my alligator is.

I've birthed BRF cakes with perlite. GT strain. They colonized awfully slowly (may have to do with the aggressiveness of the strain), but are otherwise healthy.

Thanks for all the input and info everyone, I'm still curious as to what nutritional value the BRF has over other flowers and products alike, thanks though you've been a help so far
