Racism in your life and community
    #1038215 - 11/09/02 02:32 AM (21 years, 4 months ago)

Lets talk. Racism is real and blatently going on all over America. How do you deal with overt and casual racism in your life and in your community? How does it affect you? Have you ever been the victim of racists?

Lately I've ben becoming more aware of casual racism in my community. Sports names for instance. Th Cleveland Indians with their Chief Wahoo mascot and the Atlanta Braves which mocks the Indians religion in their tomahawk chop, and the very neme of the Washington Redskins which is a reference to when the US Gov purchased the scalps of Indians for money but the scalps had to have some red skin attached to prove it wasen't a white man's scalp.

American Indians seem to be the most ridiculed by popular society today. I can't imagine the public supporting a sports team called the Cheap Jews or the Alabama niggers. But when it's ridiculing our Indian brothers it's a completely double standard. And lately I've been finding it somewhat sickening.

The public seems to enjoy mocking the heritage of minorities like this. It popular and cool. That doesn't make it right, and it must stop.

I wish I was an indian, for halloween I was at least. I got drunk and yelled at every white person at the party for the injustices done to my people. I was ready to pull out my tomahawk and mow down some doughboys. But maybe it was the firewater...

I am around people that make jokes about different races and occasionally ill throw in a joke or two.. i wouldnt consider this racist... i joke about white people a hell of alot more
i think alot of people of all races are equally stupid and close minded

sometimes i hear more black jokes than i'd like to hear, but im not gonna stand up and preach cuz i know the people (in most cases) dont actually mean anything, theyre just tryin to be funny.

yea i see where your comin from with the sports teams thing... its seems pretty lame to throw it their faces like that considering all the horrible shit that was done to them very recently in this country
actually now that i think about it, it makes me downright furious

not too long ago, there was a raid in a houston parking lot, and i was arrested for no reason, anyways. im mexican (been in the US for 7 years now) and while we were in jail, all the cops were treatin us like shit (most of them where white) and where saying things like, "fuckin wetbacks" and "what the fuck, did they raid little mexico?" and damn it makes u feel like shit. most of the ppl arrested where hispanic and black, some white and like 2 asians. we are currently undergoing a civil law suit agains the city of houston, since there was no reason to arrest 275 ppl and some of us sueing for racism. RACISM SUX

They arrested 275 people in a parking lot for no reason?

What was the charge, "being Mexican?"

Regarding the sports teams, it doesn't really bother me too much.  I don't think it's done in a mocking fashion.  I think it's more about cultural icons, and stereotypes, then a deliberate attempt to mock the Indians.

Do the New Orleans Saints offend Catholics?  They have a crucifix on their helmets .

Notre Dame call themselves "the Fighting Irish."  Does that imply that all Irish people like to fight?  Their mascot is a leprochaun...is that offensive to the mythology of old Ireland?

I don't see how picking a team mascot and symbol is meant to mock anything.  Ideally, wouldn't you want to pick a symbol that is respected, that your players would be proud of?

You don't see teams calling themselves the Miami Morons, or the Dallas Nosediggers.

yea but we didn't go to ireland, kill off their people and then make a sports team there

obviously theyre not deliberately mocking indians, maybe just being a little ignorant. if someone was conscious of all the harm done to them they'd probably think twice before naming that team

anyways, the sports team example isn't really worth arguing in my opinion, cuz its just a freakin name

people can think all they want, i can't change that even if it pisses me off.. the direct physical and verbal racism is what i'd preach against

the cops were supposed to crack down on street racing, so they raided a parking lot where "racers" hang out. im not even from houston, and we were just cruising by, sight seeing , they told us to stop the car, get out and they arrested us too. the charges were "attempt to tresspass," the charges got dropped before court day since the cops had no legitimate reason to arrest all those ppl since no body was actually racing and it was a peacefull gathering and the owner of the parking lot had not complained or asked to stop this gathering. they didnt read us our right either and we had to wait to be bused to the police station for a total of 5 hours in the parking lot while handcuffed with (extremely tight) plastic ties. they also made me sit in a puddle of water for no reason.

IMO racism is not a big problem. Sure, people make racist jokes and references, but that's just part of life. Look around you and you can see people of all different colors and religions, getting along fine. And it's improving with every generation. I will concede that there are people who are racist, and parts of the country which are also more racist than others, but hey, people have their own opinions and I respect that. Just don't take it to heart when someone says "nigger" and the word loses its meaning.

We didn't come here, kill a bunch of Indians and name a sports team after them either.

Well, maybe you did, but I assure you I was born here and the Indians were mostly already dead at that time.

You are right. They are just names. I don't really see a whole lot of harm coming from it.

Yeah, I don't want to get too politically correct with all the team names and stuff, but I do have very little patience for racism in general. If someone starts off with that kind of material in front of me, I usually make a mental note, and don't associate with them in the future. Most racists in my opinion are ignorant, scared, losers, and life is too short to hang out with idiots.

The good old days. I don't think it's racist to bust 225 kids in a parking lot but I wasn't there so...

Don't forget about the Fightin' Whities!

I think we should name fewer sports teams after indians, and start naming more SCHOOLS after them.

That's a crazy situation.  Sorry you got busted for nothing.  I recently got busted (for making a u-turn).  They made me drive to the station to get the ticket.  Then they took a while getting there.  When they did get there they had some guy in cuffs.  I argued with the cop at the station .  I have to go to court now.  I just hope the cop doesn't show cuz I'm on supervision for blowing a red light.   It was illegal (the u-turn) only cuz I was less than 100 feet from an intersecting side-street.  But you had it much worse I see.  275 kids, some in cars, in a parking lot would be dispersed you would think.  They actually wasted everyone's time doing the paperwork???

Racism, true racism, is a disease. I've grown up in an ultra conservative town, in an ultra conservative county in a ultra conservative state. I've seen a lot of racism  in my limited number of years on this planet. I don't want to turn this in to a conservative vs. liberal debate, but IME, every truely racist person that I have met has been extremly conservative.......but anyway.

As I've said I've grown up around a lot of racism. My parents are not racist whatsoever, and I was raised not to judge somebody by outward appearences. "You can't judge a book by it's cover." Though it is very cliched, it is very true. Growing up, it was always very difficult to meet people who held my views. I have know people who are racist, and though I don't think that I would call them friends, I try not to hold their opinions against them. However, I have found racism is a disease. It breeds. It infects. If you surround yourself with a disease, eventually you will find yourself infected, no matter how strong your immune system. Eventually I found myself infected, ever so slightly, yet, infected. My girlfriend's mother is extremly biggoted and racist. I could see her at a KKK meeting, however oddly enough, her husband is of Jewish decent, and their last name shows it. Over 15 years ago, they had a cross burned in their front yard. They had been a victim of racism and biggotry, and oddly enough she is probably the biggest biggot I have ever met. She passed her biggotry down to her daughter, my girlfriend. On many occasions it has nearly become a breaking point in our relationship. Over our six years she has gotten better, but she is still bad. Being with her has impacted me for the worse in some ways. Often I feel sick.

I do not like to surround myself with casual racism either. It is just as bad.

I've never been a direct target of racism per se. Being a white male, in the US, I have been afforded afforded this luxury by mere chance. However, I am of Polish/Jewish/French/Canadian decent. Hell, a entire joke book could probably be written on Polish/Jewish/French/Canadians. What can i do? It dosn't bother me much. I like the reaction I get from somebody who just told me a polock joke when I tell them I am of ploish descent. If you've never seen a face turn 100 shades of red, I highly recomend it.

The issue with the sports teams bothers me a bit. If the Indians feel offended then I believe that something should be done about it. It goes beyond somebody having a racist viewpoint.

You know R_G, this is a semi-liberal outlook you've taken. Are you sick or something?

I think you need to loosen up a little.

Try not to be offended by everything you see. It really helps in life.

The world is too politically correct as it is.
