Cake Dehydration help
    #10370848 - 05/20/09 04:51 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

Greetings all

OK so heres the deal, a friend of a friend started growing cakes... he has done this MANY times before, and never encountered this issue.

He waited one week after 100% colo , and birthed them into this shotgun terr. previously he made sure that the terr was at 90-90% RH and the temps are in the mid 70's 80's... they have been birthed for a week with no bumps or signs of growth, they actually started bluing.

being as he has done this before, and experimented with this, he injected distilled water into each cake which seemed to help a little, but still, no bumps... and i know this is a waiting game, but i wanted to know if there was anything he could do besides dunk them

here is a pic of his setup

Dunk.
Also, your perlite isn't really very deep.

Try more like 6-8 inches.

dunk them for 12 hours then roll them in vermiculite. they should pin within 2-4 days after returning to the fc.

is the fruiting chamber off the ground so air can rise from the holes in the bottom through the perlite?

dunk those things. I didn't at first and had no pins 8 days later. I dunked over night and the second morning had pins all over the place. The extra water is what is needed

You know, your right, its not lifted so the holes on bottom can push air up... what a frigging idiot i am! im going to use 4 wide mouth 1/2 pints to prop it off the desk im using. hopfully that works..

also its been 8 days in the FC with no change, just some bluing from dehydration. if i dont see anything by day 10, im gonna dunk and roll

thanks guys

why do you not want to dunk? its the most effective way of fully hydrating a cake. Remember that such a small substrate doesnt hold much moisture,, and mushroom really pull alot of moisture from the cakes.

Also, if your getting your cakes wet from mistng, that can cause them to bruise

Laplus, your small FC has PLENTY of perlite.  While perhaps you should have dunked at birth, dunking now will actually delay pinning.  If you recently injected the cakes with water, I would wait on the dunk.  If anything I'd lay a pile of wet verm on top of the cakes.  But your cakes look fine, they'll pin soon regardless of what hydration treatment you give them.
