Psilocybe cubensis on dung/straw compost, cased with coir/verm.

Swim believes his 50/50 Poo/Straw mix cased with Coco Coir/Verm/Oyster Shell might overlay in the next few days. He has tried to initiate pinning somewhat aggresively, but is looking for advice on what to do next.

Any suggestions?

Well how are you trying to initiate pinning? The way that you asked the question is like going to the doctors and saying "I'm sick" and expecting him to know right away what's wrong. Help us help you

Valid Question. Swim initiated pinning by (the usual) fanning, slight drop in temperature, and keeping the humidity pretty high.

Well what are the temps that it was at and is at now? How often are you fanning? And how long has it been since you cased? And what strain? I think it looks really good actually, I would be more worried cause it looks like your gonna have to pick a shitload of mushrooms, thats gonna take time away from smoking.

Swim's incubation temp was 80 degrees, plus the +5 degrees generated by the casing. Current temps are 75 degrees. Swim is planning on working with this Gulf Coast strain in the future with agar in hopes of producing even more rhizomorphic growth. Fanning occurs 3-4 times per day. Casing was applied Nov 4.
The second answer I was hoping to get from this thread was is there a reason to worry about overlay. Thanks!

I'd have to agree with you on that one, the gulf coast strain has been the weakest that I've grown out. But f8L, it seems alright, you should have pins soon. Just keep on keepin on.

Yeah-- Swim has been working with this Gulf Coast strain exclusively since he started. Fruits have been large in quantity but extremely small in size.. Decent potency though. Thanks for the feedback.

If all you've worked with is Gulf coast, you should really try to grow out some cambodians. They are pretty nice, the visuals are much better, IME.

That most recent pic looks like you need to pin right away! Have you tried ice? If you set those plastic freeze things on top of a bell jar lid in there, it should pin after a few hours.
good luck

Swim just placed 3 ice packs underneath the casing... the current temperature inside the casing is 73.5 degrees

obviously, your ideal temp for pinning is roughly 70... do what you can to get that... and try some blue leds for light.

Swim doubts blue LED's have any effect whatsoever. Here's the latest pic... seems like the mycelium is unstopable

I'm hoping this thread can alert people as to what overlay is and how it might develope, please move this to the appropriate forum if you think this thread does not belong here.
Here is the latest picture of the casing, Nov11

Still no pins? Primordia? WTF? It still doesn't look like overlay yet, overlay looks like a the side of a wet, orangeish-whiteish cat, I know it sounds stupid, but thats how it looks. Yours just looks like its gonna bust open with pins any day.

What is your light source?
Pinning can take up to five days to occur. I would not worry. I have worked with many strains that colonise the casing completely on their first flush. Be sure to keep the humidity up and a good source of light. Keep up your air exchanges.
Most of all, be patient.

All in all, overlay is not SUCH a big deal with small scale cultivation of P. cubensis. Just give it some time, you will see fruits soon nevertheless.

I have a casing in the same situation only a few days behind. I'm going to give it lots of time, but if it completely colonizes and continues to be inactive for a few days then I'll probably deep scratch. That is a way of breaking through overlay isn't it?
