ID help please - Tassie, probable psilocybe (with pics)
    #10379894 - 05/22/09 02:13 AM (14 years, 9 months ago)

Heya there funguys n gals,

A few weeks ago I found an interesting little patch of Psilocybe looking, subaeruginosa-ish shrooms and I need some ID help please.

My aim this season has been to find non-subaeruginosa psilocybes in Tassie. So far I found a few lone p. semilanceata's and a possible patch of p. Eucalyptas which I might pick this weekend and try and confirm the ID (I don't like to pick more shrooms than I will personally use between now and next season).

Aaaanyway - I spotted a little patch of 3 shrooms that looked very much like subs until i got down close and checked out the gills. Then i got confused

So I picked one intending to try and ID it, but didn't get around to it before it dried out. So I went back today (2 weeks later) and grabbed the other one that was still there.

Habitat: In a small strip of leaf and eucalypt bark litter in between a concrete path and a fence in Hobart Tasmania near a grassy reserve.

Cap: Obtusely conic. Caramel, from above, very similiar to subaeruginosa but maybe a little brighter. Blueing quickly right around the edges after picking.

Stem: White, straight, like a sub. some blueing at base where picked. And some blueing where it joins the cap.

Gills: Creamy white colour. Bit of blueing. The thing that is different to the other subs i've seen about this area is that when the subs have conic caps the gills kind of sit up higher than the where the cap comes down on the stem and they are a bit darker than these gills.  With these shrooms the cap is conic and the gills are attached almost as low as the cap goes.

Also, when dry, the gills stayed quite light instead of going dark like the other dry subs. and stayed looking quite different. I'll take a spore print tonight.

Anyway, here's some pics. The pics are of a fresh and dry version of the question shroom and a dry sub for comparison. Big thanks to anyone who can help.... it's probably a sub and I am just gettting over-excited...

looks like you got some subs mate

lol just actually read that, perhaps the fresh one is sterile and has no spores. It is a not unheard of phenotypical trait in psilocybes

Subs  The fresh one does look a bit odd, with the white gills. I can see clear bluing on the cap of all of them, bluing in the stems. Subs can look very different/odd depending on the location where you pick them, I have stumbled on a few patches that I was sure weren't Subs until closer inspection

About 90% of all fruits in my last Golden Teacher grow were sterile. They looked friggin awesome with their light golden gills.
Means, yes, I agree. That's a sterile specimen.

Wicked, thanks for your help! Nice to know it really does look different and i am not trippin! well.. more than usual anyway

Thanks I'll do some research on sterile shrooms. The gills do look way cool.

One way to test this is to try and make a spore print with that specimen. If after 6 hours you see no spores deposited on a piece of tinfoil then you have a sterile specimen. If there are spores and they are not purplish then you have something else. I'd do this in any case just to make sure.
Sterility is more common than one would think in mushrooms. Here's a pic of sterile P. semilanceata:

I've found some myself a couple of years ago. They looked wicked, like ghost mushrooms.
