Question on marijuana legalization bills (House 2929/ Senate 1801)
    #10379644 - 05/22/09 02:48 AM (11 years, 9 months ago)

They're both pretty much the same, so I'll only link the House Bill.

Ok, let me get this straight... If this passes, a class C retailer of cannabis in Massachusetts would have to pay an excise tax of $150 dollars per ounce, even higher for lesser licenses?! The retail prices would be exorbitant. I don't mean to nitpick over laws that would regulate and tax marijuana, but who the hell would pay that much? It would still be everywhere illegally, only to be legally smoked and no profits made for the state.

Correct me if I am understanding this wrong; It just sounds too asinine, even for Massachusetts.

Edit: At least the annual cultivation license fee seems to be about right; I'd pay 500 bucks a year.

Once you start trying to figure out the political executions of policy writers, your ability to understand obtuse senselessness must exponentially increase, otherwise you'll surely go bald from head-scratching and sexually impotent from exhausted & mis-channeled testosterone expulsion.

I think you'll have no problem paying that much when the THC content is 80%, and pharmaceutical companies like GW pharmaceuticals of the uk have already genetically modified strains to be super potent.

My point is with legal weed you won't even need to buy a whole ounce.

I still think I'd rather pay the 500 dollar a year cultivation license and just buy some every now and then if it really is that potent.

80% THC doesn't seem right, I could have sworn that GW maxed around 25%... Yeah, sorry, 80% would just be impossible. Don't be a tool.

the point is to continue punishing those that smoke, the voters
say they want the laws changed but the ballots leave little room
to say how, the legislators, law enforcement and whom ever has
their fingers in the pie get together and determine how they can
keep screwing the people, I'll explain how

what you can expect as you've already mentioned, there would
still be lots of illegal sales, the legal growers wont be
producing as much because it will be monitored, the amount grown
will need to be accounted for, if it's not going to retailers it
must be hitting the black market, if the weed you buy on the
black market doesnt have a tax stamp or what ever other control
device ten there's another violation, possession of untaxed drugs

this allows law enforcement to show that even though it's
legalized or decriminalized that the criminal activity around
the drug is still through the roof because they're busting
growers, dealers and buyers... the whole system is being
designed to fail so that n a few years they can point it out
as decriminalization efforts were worse than in the old system

it's again time for you guys to organize and make your voices
heard in the legislature, this is their way of saying "fuck you,
we get the last laugh" and remember, these are your elected
representatives, hopefully come election time they'll be looking
for jobs

Yeah I read that, it gives me the hope that the starting fees are only icebreakers. But hey, it's Massachusetts, man.

this bill gets worse the more you read it....not surprised, disappointed. Taking a break at sect 14.  the first sections brought interest, then burns it slowly away during sect 10.  Don't get clumsy around your stamp, godforbid it gets stained. I havent finished reading obviously, But does the "stamp machine" come included with the licensing fee's?

They have a strain with 70% THCV, why not a strain with 70 to 80% THC? They did say 70% may be the limit, but that's a fuck of a lot. 18% is the norm for high quality weed.

Give me some sources where it says they maxed out at 25%. I find that hard to believe when they can get a strain with 70% THCV, but you could be right.

"In 1998 Hortapharm sold its seed stock to a British start-up, GW Pharmaceuticals, which has since developed a strain that expresses 97% of its cannabinoid content as CBD"

There's another quote. 97% is a ridiculous amount even if it were CBD, because surely they can do that with THC too.

Just buy the schwagy weed and put it through a vaporizer, ka-boom 85-90% THC :vaped:

I can't believe there's a state bill to legalize marijuana and you people are bitching.  Of course it's going to start off ridiculously expensive, that's how the politicians are going to justify it at first. However as the hemp and marijuana industries gain capital and influence, it'll all even out.

Good times ahead my brothers and sisters.  :getstoned:

Now for the final quote:

"C'Notes: And what percentage of the cannabinoids in your high-THC strain is THC?

GWG: 97%.

C'Notes: What's the level in your high-CBD strain?

GWG: 97%.
"

From http://www.maps.org/media/ava7.25.03.html

Maxes out at 97%. LOL. Weed that potent would be ridiculous. Everyone would be rolling tooth pick joints.

That means only 18.75 dollars of tax per eighth of bud. Someone could probably sell for 40 an eighth and if it was good buds, it'd be 20 dollars less than it is now ('round here anyway)

Holy shit, looks like someone had a total meltdown while I was gone.
Divinity, shut the fuck up, please. I never denied Pris' words, I just said that I hoped he was wrong. Thank you for the PM telling me you proved me wrong and to go ride a black dick; very original. I can't imagine anyone smoking pot specifically bred for research and medicine, nor the government allowing its sale to the public. So you proved me wrong on ONE thing, go eat a fucking cookie.

Besides, that shit was bred by GW, and our government isn't about to be selling us that British research weed. As long as they don't sell us NIDA style stuff, we're all good. I doubt any pot for the general public will ever reach much more percentage than mid the mid 20's. We don't need any higher cannabinoid levels that that anyway.

As for anyone that thinks I am bitching, I am not. All I wanted was someone to tell me the sense in it their retail excise taxes. Keep in mind that store owners would want profit too if they were going to sell the stuff, and $150 tax is for class C licenses, and like double that for a class A.
