What's the best "Growing for Dummies" kit?
    #1037437 - 11/08/02 07:49 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

I tried the Homestead Book Company kit, which is cool in that in only involves two steps - 1) Mix the spores into the grain and wait for the mycelium to take over 2) dump the grain into the compost and wait for the shrooms. That's it! And everything's included (including the plastic grow box). No sterile work, no petri dishes, nothing else other than those two steps. But it's $100. Any other good "Growing for Dummies" kits that anyone's aware of that might be a little cheaper?

Do you want a kit just so its easier to see results your first time? Or you don't have a presure cooker or what?

My most important criteria is ease of use (in other words, I don't want to spend too much time on any harvest). The Homestead kit requires no more than 5 minutes of total time invested per harvest (about 1 minute of that is unpacking it) plus about 10 minutes reading the directions if you're using it for the 1st time. The Homestead kit is that easy, and I got results my first try. But it's $100 a pop, and then you toss it and buy a new kit. Just wondering if there was something that simple for less.

Well first, read your pms man
100 Bucks is a bit steep. Ok its fricken nuts I think.  Honestly the pf tek wont take you all that much longer. And its a whole hell of alot cheaper. What you could do is buy some pre steralized substrate from sporeworks. Just buy some of that in a bag and a spore syringe that would actually take less time at a 1/3 of the cost.

That method seems inexpensive, but still involves pressure cookers and stuff.  More work than I care to do.

Well there are ways to get around the presure cooker too if your using brown rice flower. Microwave or oven. Not as effective but it still works.
Go to www.sporeworks.com You'll find for 15 bucks their myco bags. 13 bucks for a syringe and your in business for 28 bucks plus shipping. Hows that for cheaper

No, just stick the syringe in and shoot. Its even easier then that kit you found and 1/3 the price hehe how these places sell those kits I'll never understand.

The PF tek does NOT require a Pressure cooker... I grew for well over a year without one.... Besides, better you do the PF tek and learn something then just "shoot, wait, trip" without understanding the gift you're being given...

Wether or not its better todo the PF tek or use a kit is a matter of opinion. If using a kit will then lead a person on to the PF Tek and then on to more advanced mycology then I say hell yeah for kits. I personally started with an interest in growing psychodelic mushrooms due to a lack of supply with the dealers I knew. That then lead to an interest in cultivation of medicinal and gourmet mushrooms and has latly also expanded to include all aspects of mycology and microbiology. I'm very interested at the moment in the symbiotic relationship of algae and mushrooms to form Linchens. Now if all of that could start from GoBlue ordering a kit? How can you say thats a bad thing?
Go for it GoBlue and I hope you expand your horizens.

One of my friends bought a mexican cubensis kit which was really easy for the first time beginner. All you do is take the casing out of it's box and put it in the bag supplied, spray the surface of the casing and then seal the bag with a couple of paper clips. I think they cost ?23 @ http://www.magicplants.co.uk/easykit.html

Hope this helps
