Hey shroomerites, i noc'd up my first grow yesterday. PF Tek. naturally i'm doing the noob thing and freaking when i don't see mycelium in the first 2 days. PF Tek for simple minds from fungifun is the tek that i followed, i have some polypropylene plastic jars and some glass tumblers with foil caps. Steamed for 1.5 hours and noc'd up with 1 ml Golden Teacher spore soltion each. Print was from ralphster, made up my own syringes. Just a few quick questions, what should the BRF substrate look like from outside the jars? mine looks a little slick with condensation all around the inside. no water pooling in the bottom. and how long should i expect to be waiting before i see mycelium? jars are in a 26C incubator. This thread may end up serving as a small journal for my grow. i'll get around to posting some pics some time.
cheers, chazz

Mine look exactly the same. First grow, inoculated with Ecuador 8 days ago. Just got some mycelium growth overnight. Be very patient, its an annoyingly long process unluckily

Hi chazz, the BRF-cake shouldn't look slickly at all. It should have a grainy texture, moist but not wet. I don't know if you better kick em away but at least it will last much longer to fully colonize the cake. First mycelium will be able to see on day 3-4, if you used the syringe without soaking the spores for 24h it will take a little longer. MFG Mindbender

When my friend did a PF tek for the first time (Still on going 100% colonized now ) we waited 7 days with no growth. This may have been because of the low temperature. Although, many people say don't worry until after about 10 days.
(Try and give them time to grow without you peeking )

i couldn't really think of an apropriate word to describe the appearance.... it doesn't look sticky let me put it that way. i'll post a pic in a while. i followed the ratios of the tek though so i'm sure the moisture content is fine. chazz

hurry up and wait.
The dryer the jar the faster it colonizes. Try loosening the lids just a little to help lower moisture. That has worked for me before.

You both sound like some haters... Let the man show his jars off, he's proud! And he's got something proud to be about, he's a noob and he's accomplishing something! You were all noobs at one point, I'm a noob right now so I understand where he's coming from! Show off your pics brew!

Got 2 cakes out of 6 in the FC, they colonised quickly. 12 hour dunk followed by roll. 1 cake contam'd, other 4 are going a little longer. FC is a shotgun, 2 inches of perlite, lots of holes. RH up around 90. 6 hours daylight spectrum light from a CFL per day. will update with pics soon, a mate has my cam. so, the big question. how long before i can expect pins? i suppose it's relative to genetics and idividual substrain etc. cheers chazz

Chazz...I had my fully colonized and consolidated cakes in the fruiting chamber for 2-3 days before I saw the first pin. From what I understand this figure can vary greatly depending on conditions.

OK guys so i have my fc set up EXACTLY as described in RRs video. a few inches of perlite, many holes, misting and fanning 3 times a day, RH is 95% constantly, temps 18-20C. 12/12 6500K CFL. still seeing no pins and it's been about a week. some of the cakes are getting little fluffy offshoots of mycelium, but they aren't hyphal knots.
is this a normal amount of time to wait? i think i may have birthed some of the cakes a little early, not leaving them enough time to consolidate. they were all 100% when i birthed them, but i only gave them about 4 days to consolidate. is this something that could slow down a pinset?
cheers chazz
