Safecache alternatives
    #10372252 - 05/20/09 08:43 PM (15 years, 2 days ago)

It seems the version of safecache that is availible doesn't work with the new version of fire fox. Is there another anti cache based tracking device or do I take a chance with running just a proxy. I'm really uppity about security because the college kids around here seem to have nothing better to do than see what people look at and talk about it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I am not sure why you are worried about cache based tracking.  That is something the web site owners would use.

The college kids around you are probably using wireshark to track your every move.

The correct way to handle this problem is to encrypt your outgoing traffic until it leaves the area where they can sniff packets.

If you can set up a VPN server somewhere else (preferably in another state, on a fast connection) and VPN into that, then all your connections will be secure from local attackers.

Another solution that works very well is tunneling your web traffic over ssh.  This will leave things like your POP passwords to be exploited by bored people watching your local network, but it will secure all your web traffic quite well with low overhead and additional latency.
