Why filter on rye jar.
    #10370107 - 05/20/09 02:40 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

I have a begginers question.
Why when preparing rye jar, there should be a filtered hole?
It is uneccesary with whole rice flour.
I thought that in this stage, the mycilium is not breathing

BRF uses a dry layer of vermiculite as its filter,  When using grains you don't use dry verm as a filter because it will need to be shaken during colonization. So they use tyvek, cotton and other shi as a filter, I can't really be to specific on the filter it uses because I only have done Pf-Tek and have spawned to bulk trays occasionally. Hope this helps clarifying things for you.

Yes you should filter it. You still need gas exchange, as pf jars do too, it is just through the dry verm layer(which is your filter too). You can use polyfil stuffed in a tiny hole you can make with a phillips screw driver, or use a plastic one-piece lid with a hold drilled in it with a synthetic filter disk from a sponsor. I would suggest the polyfil and metal lid with ring. Plastic lids tend to pop off once in a while.

When the mycelium is colonizing the jars, they do need to breathe a bit. It's like if you were taking a slow walk; you'd still need to breathe, just not alot. When the mycelium are fruiting, it's like running and they need alot of air.
Go for a filter.

You should, but you don't have to. I just do 4 holes in the lid with Tape one it and a layer of tinfoil while I PC it. And to inject the spores I remove the Foil, pierce the Tape and recover the lid whit the Foil. I shake the Rye but I dont have a lot of wastage even without polyfil.
