Pot and your Lungs
    #10357629 - 05/18/09 08:54 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

First off, I know ANY smoke is not god for the lungs. With that said, I always heard pot smoke is just as bad as cig smoke for you. But, every study I have found to support this, the group studied also smoked CIGS. They're is a large number of pot smokers like me that don't like cigs, or only have one a month at tops. How bad is the smoke for you?

It won't increase your chances of getting cancer. It will eventually get your lungs all black/brown with tar.

If you use a vape you skip the tar from smoking, and get the effects of a bronchiodilator and expectorant.

Yup. Although it hasn't been studied, somebody who vapes but doesn't smoke almost certainly has a substantially smaller risk of developing cancer compared to the non-smoking population.  Cannabis contains chemicals with proven cancer-preventing and cancer-fighting benefits.

So what's the brown stuff that cannabis smokers hack up? Magical brown non-tar goodness??

I'm not saying it leads to any substantial complications down the line, but any long-term heavy cannabis smoker can tell you, there's some gray/brown shit that builds up in your lungs.

I might have to make a poll on this issue later.  Because I started hacking up gray/brown shit years before I started smoking cigs. And every heavy long-term smoker I know hacks that stuff up, not just the ones who smoke cigs

I dont smoke cigs and I hack up black stuff alot.  It comes in spurts, sometimes I hack every morning and sometimes I dont for a few weeks.  Also, after smoking too much weed I wheeze alot, and get a burning sensation in chest area.

Get a vaporizer.

Less lung damage, better quality high, uses less material.

Tastes better, little to no smell.

I dont smoke pot, though I do have friends that hack up black shit and do not smoke cigs.

Here is wikipedias take:

"The smoking of cannabis is the most harmful method of consumption, since the inhalation of smoke from organic materials such as cannabis, tobacco, and rolling papers can cause various health problems.[22]

In comparison, study on cannabis vaporizing found that subjects were "only 40% as likely to report respiratory symptoms as users who do not vaporize, even when age, sex, cigarette use, and amount of cannabis consumed are controlled."[23] Another study found vaporizers to be "a safe and effective cannabinoid delivery system."[24][25]

A 2007 study by the Canadian government found cannabis smoke contained more toxic substances than tobacco smoke.[27] The study determined that marijuana smoke contained 20 times more ammonia, and five times more hydrogen cyanide and nitrogen oxides than tobacco smoke. In spite of this, recent studies have been unable to demonstrate a direct link between lung cancer and frequent direct inhalation of marijuana smoke. While many researchers have failed to find a correlation,[28][29] some researchers still conclude that cannabis smoke poses a higher risk of lung cancer than tobacco.[30] Some studies have even shown that the non-intoxicating ingredient CBD found in marijuana may be useful in treating breast cancer.[31]"

I have  been a mod to heavy mj user for the past 13 yrs. and I have maybe smoked a total of 3 packs of cigs in my lifetime.

I have never coughed up anything, nor have I ever had any sort of chronic, hacking type cough that is often exhibited by my cig smoking friends.

I didn't smoke cigs.

Same as Mr Bump. I even breath a little better when I smoke weed a lot, but then I'll buy a pack of cigars and by the time I'm done with them I'm hacking shit up every night.

TBH, I don't pay much attention to the large majority of previous cannabis studies, especially government ones.

It's well known that governments restrict funding and cannabis itself to any research that shows cannabis is positive.

At the same time, heavily fund, supply and publish any material that shows cannabis is negative.

I'll give you one, I can run a vaporizer through a bong, vaporizer 50g+ and get high all day everyday for months on end.

At the end of it, the water is basically clear, with a slight yellow resin tinge.

1g of combusted smoke would dirty up the bong far greater.

how is it significantly healthier, because of the claims by an
ad in high times? is it because some pro marijuana 'research
lab' has deemed it to be so, how is it that with 483 chemicals
found in marijuana  only THC has a vaporization point low enough
that it suddenly makes smoking the material safe, what's the
vaporization temp for THC, what's that temperature for the
hydrocarbon, alcohols, vitamins, ketones, sugars, etc...

every 'study' I've seen is presented by corporations or some
other pro pot organization... of course there cant be a bias there

my butt is 100x cleaner when I use toluene, that doesnt mean it's healthier

seems most herbs vaporized are at temperatures a good bit lower
than marijuana, MJ is done at around 200C, tobacco, lemon balm and
ginko is as low as 140C, lavender vapes at 130C, cloves at 135C

still believing the propaganda, aside from the cannabinols what else is in that 'vapor'

I know one thing for sure, it definitely causes less stress on MY lungs.

I ride A grade criterium/train 7 days a week. I noticed an immediate performance increase once I quit smoking and started vaporizing, my lungs are feeling better everyday.
