Anyone used plastic/tupperware containers.
    #1035520 - 11/08/02 10:50 AM (18 years, 8 months ago)

Seen these at my local supermarket, they are the perfect shape and size with air tight lids. I was considering giving them a try but wondered on the best way to sterilise the contents sfter I filled them. I expect a PC would melt them, but what about standing them in a water-filled bowl and microwaving them? Also does Vermiculite microwave OK, or does it have the same effect as metal.

Any input greatly appreciated.

Jackal

dishwasher with Heat Dry cycle might work!

spray them with lysol and wipe them down?

boil them?

all should work ok,,, just be clean about it!

you can microwave vermiculite as long as it's wet, keep a close eye on it tho! you might want to have a glass of water in the microwave at the same time just in case as it will absorbe some of the heat and intensity!

Use gladware microwaveable plastic dishes, mix your substrate and microwave it for 8 minuets to sterilize, then just do the normal pf deal

I've had good success with this ^ as well, better in fact than with boiling jars.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

really? 8 minutes eh? i would think just a simple wipedown of the container and a pc and transfer of the substrate would work ok ...wouldnt it?

Complete bullshit - microwave sterisation is crap. Youll get contams 9/10 times.
Plastic tupperware containers are IDEAL! And the ones i have are fully pc-able and ive even autoclavged them twice.

from my experiences blue is right. You may hit 250 deg, but you can't be sure the entire container gets to the temp and for long enough.
