Hrm, I dont know much about mega-watt bulbs. What's the lifetime on one of those? I'm not so much concerned about the initial cost of the light setup as I am about the monthly cost in power (not really concerned, just intrigued).
Got any ballpark estimates on those two figures?

You may not need a light. I would get the plants first. If you notice the cacti stretching or the plants are looking light deprived go from there. I do like P viridis. Nice suggestion.

Grow weed. P. viridis is not worth, takes too long. And you need a whole jungle of it for one dose.

If you're going to grow any of these plants you're certainly going to want to grow at least 4 of each in case you kill them.
Flouro's are MUCH too weak to grow plants much bigger than 2 feet. (in my opinion, from personal experience. this is saying if you have 10 or so different plants under some flouro's you won't cut it. having individual flouro bulbs on one or two plants would do fine based on how you set them up)
Also, don't go crazy on artificial lighting should it suddenly intrigue you a lot more. Here's some MAJOR PERSONAL TIPS FROM MANY MANY DIFFERENT SET UPS!
1. If you want 10-20 plants of decent size, get a 600w or more preferably a 1000w. (1000w = ~20$ a month electric) (1000w will AMPLY light up a 10x10 foot area, unless you're doing some extremely dense Sea of Green MJ grow, then it'll cover 8x8) You're plants will grow anywhere from 4 to 10 times thicker, quicker, healthier, greenier, etc than anything you could grow under flouro's. also keep in mind each flouro is 32 or 40 watts per bulb, so if you get 4 shop lights(2bulbs per fixture) you're already at 320 watts!! a 1000w Metal Halide sodium outputs light almost twice as efficiently as flouro's, at nearly ten times the intensity, in the exact light spectrums that plants thrive at, so if you're getting any light at all you might as well get a 400watt Metal Halide, and if you're already investing the money might as well chip in the extra 200$ to get a 1000watt system for 2.5x the growing potential.
2. Get a DIGITAL ballast, as the analog ones are noisy. Don't cut costs here. get a DIGITAL.
3. Also, make sure to buy a METAL HALLIDE bulb since most ethno's aren't flower-harvested. (Metal Halide makes for BUSHY vegetative plants.)
4. You won't need that tanning membership for 24.99$/month anymore, as you can sit naked with your plants and get a tan under that 1000w light!
5. DO NOT go hydroponic or aeroponic you're first time growing anything. Learn the plant first before you get fancy. (this shit will intrigue you as you learn more, and if your a perfectionist you'll want to dive in. don't. not yet. Wait until next year)
6. Kava kava is a pretty ineffective drink unless you drink TONS of it, so growing it for harvest reasons = waste of time.
7. Kratom is like oxy's if you take enough of it (eat it parachuted or in gelcaps)
8. I'm growing Blue Lotus and so far I love it, even though it's far from a typical house plant =) JOIN THE REVOLUTION - become a lotus eater!
9. Do well and don't fuck around in college =)

1000W is only good for a 5x5' to 6x6' primary. I don't give a shit what the vendors say.
A 600W is better than a 1000W for the dollar and is almost as effective. Look it up.
A MH or HPS either way would be fine. With a Lumatek ballast he could have it both ways (not a conversion ballast)
Kava kava is effective if you get a non alcohol based extraction (70%). But yeah, not worth growing for consuming. The roots are what you want anyway.
Hydro or Aero is a poor choice for mix matched plants. Seriously?
Kratom is nothing like oxy lol.
Lotus sucks worse than kava kava.
Dude, do go saying shit unless you really know wtf you are talking about.

Thanks for clearing that up ethnoguy. I'm still over a month away from getting the lighting - so there's plenty of time for me to research & decide what best fits my needs. I won't be growing kava kava, so don't worry about that.
Keep the convo goin peeps - this is wonderfully helpful!

I have a kava kava plant coming. Understand that some of use have such a damn addiction to collecting ethno/entheos, that practicality goes out the window. I want at least one of all of them
What kind of lighting budget do you have? That's where I always try to start. We can give you some good suggestions if we know your price range. What kinda space are we working with anyway (length & width & height)?

EG - I'm not in the appartment yet. I'm just trying to get a general feel for what I'm going for. Once I'm officlally moved in I'll be able to start making concrete assessments of space, budget, etc.
Although I did just get my valet job back, and tonight was my first night -- walked with $171 + base pay (5.85/hr)
So things are looking up
