Advice needed on my kratom plant

Hello.
I have a nice kratom plant that has been outside for a year. Last Spring and Summer it did well. In the Winter the leaves fell off as they did last year. Then when Spring rolled around the plant started growing new leaves and stems.
They looked beautiful, until the leaves started turning rusty red. Now they are turning completely red and falling off. The rot/red has spread to the stems and they are falling off too. Help! Any advice?

Ive had the same problems with my mother since ive gotten her, take cuttings, and grow those out. My cuttings always are healthier than my mom once they root, shes been through hell sicne ive gotten her, and she lost every single one of her leaves except a few small shoots when I moved her to her new location.
Even without a single leaf your plant should spring back, but my cuttings always grow healthy while the mom has problems.
Ive had the red problems when Id move her from not much sun to alot of sun, are you giving them more light than normal?

Odd problem. Never seen it. Now I'm curious. Anytime my kratom plants were stressed they dropped their leaves. Man that pisses me off lol.

Thanks for the replies.
Well the plant has been in the same location since last Spring. No changes in the light situation. She receives full sun. Central Florida.
They are a rain forest tree, correct? She did wonderful last year in this same location. She started growing wonderfully with the recent warm weather. Then she just started turning red and dieing. All new growth is pretty much gone.
I used some organicide when I first noticed the leaves turning red and dieing. It is a certified organic insecticide and fungicide. It is made of 92% fish oil, 5% sesame oil, and 2% other ingredients that I can't remember right now.
I hope I haven't lost my baby.

They hate winter, period.
Theyl drop all thier leaves during winter, they are from thailand, and from what ive read that place is very very HOT. And I wouldnt doubt it seeing how these plants react to the cold.
Theyl survive our florida winters, but theyl get stressed out, I had one plant die during winter, and it was the healthiest one before winter, it was very very healthy and had alot of offshoots from being topped.
We have been getting some intense sun lately. My advice to you would be to move it to a place with less sun, that should bring the redding down, I have a post I made last year I would look up for you that shows the sun spots. When I moved her to like 50/50 shade/sun she started doing better.
My internet is too slow right now to look it up, I can barely get it to load a page without it displaying the page cannot be found.

Well here is one of your mother's one month old cuttings (well, since I got it from you). It has since put out 3 new sets of leaves and is 16" tall (and the largest leaves 6"). I have already taken a side cutting and was contemplating taking a cutting from the top(?) to give more bushiness. It's beautiful now, so I hope it dosen't develop pathogen problems.

Ive been growing cuttings for a long time off this plant, Havent had any problems with the cuttings doing the redness, and Ive had alot of people buy cuttings without the problems.
Its just the mother, I noticed her soil was more muddy (This is also a problem, these plants love the airy soil I give them, it has LOTS of perlite in it) than my other plants, So I just changed that after I moved her up here, and thats when she really lost it. She was all droopy and I couldnt stand it after two days, So I made her into cuttings to reduce transpiration, now shes already shooting me out quite a few new shoots. Even though shes back to just the stem and no leaves.
Your plant seems to be enjoying its location, what kind of light do you have it in? a shaded area?
That plants older than a month, it was overwintered and thats why it had a big stem that had new shoots coming from it, it died down, the other one that died down died completeely I seen it trying to shoot out some shoots. I havent seen it in a while since its in a different location, Theres a chance itl spring back, its about an inch tall brown stem.

Yes, it is getting dappled sun/shade beneath a larger tree canopy. It does get about 2 hours of full morning sun. I also live fairly close to the coast, so it stays fairly humid (and dosen't get terribly hot). What do you think about me taking another cutting now right beneath the second large leaf node?

Go for it, all itl do is give you an extra plant, and cause your plant to bush out from each node.
Your plant is loving the shade, mine are too right now since I moved them onto a balcony that is enclosed.

I was thinking about cutting the leaves in half when taking the cutting, but do you think I need to do that? Also, should I remove the top bud?
Yeah, I realize it's totally older than a month, but only meant that I have had it about the long (and it's probably doubled in size). Also, you can't see it in the pic, but the smaller stem I took a cutting from is still there and sending out a couple of side shoots. For medium, I used 1/2 vermicompost with a large amount of perlite.

Was your last cuttings successful? I seen you did it in water, I think.
Cutting the leaves in half is a good idea because it reduces the amount of water the plant releases, and doesnt let it dry out as fast.
If by remove the top bud you mean to top the cutting after you cut it, I would not advise that, just take the cutting and only cut the leaves, and remove the bottomone or two leaves.
When I take acutting I like to make a diagnal slice through the node, itl leave one of the leaves on the plant at that node, and give you one leaf on your cutting at that node, I usually remove the bottom leaves to reduce transpiration. And cut the other leaves. If I dont do that the plants are droopy the whole time while rooting, and have a chance at drying out completely and dieing.

Yep, I was thinking about doing it much as you suggest. I have lots of experience taking cuttings of other types of plants and it is better to take a diagonal cut just on or slightly below a leaf node as you suggest - because that is where the most growth hormones are found.
My last cutting started to root in water, but I moved it to a medium because I read that roots started in water are least adaptable to soil later. The only reason I was doing it in water was because of reading so many articles on the supposed endogenous fungus which causes many kratom not to strike. However, I don't know about that now.

I prefer the diagnal cut because it leaves your mother plant with an extra leaf on it, lol. The more the better
I do my cuttings in the same soil your cutting came in. the perlite, peat, verm mix. I would think the soil your using would be fine to root in, your plant is liking it.
I think if the OPs soil is muddy, or holds too much moisture, or just doesnt have good drainage, thats one of his problems as well, my mother is the only one who had the problems, and shes the only one who didnt have an airy soil.

Perhaps the stem/root system isn't designed against any sort of freezing temperature? Does it get frosty where you are? Is the plant in a pot above ground?
You should post a picture so we can see. Freezing may kill the roots, and without those recovery and survival will be difficult.

It doesnt reach freezing in florida often, but it does get down in the 40s. maybe mid 30s at the coldest.

Yeah, because I live close to the coast, it is a little more protected but we still had some hard freezes this year. What I plan to do with future freezes, is keep the kratom in pots (though some may end up being huge) and just lay them carefully on the ground and cover with sheets etc. I have done this with other tropical trees and it worked well.

You could build a greenhouse for them, I was thinking of going to home depot and geting pvc for a frame, and some clear plastic to go over it, that should keep the heat in during winter.
And it would be pretty cheap too.
But youd have to watch for teh hurricans

got a pic? turning red is due to the pigments in them, mostly caretenoids. many plants that sunburn are doing so because they kick into a defensive system (xanthophyll cycle) which tries to protect itself from too much light. if it is coming out from winter into suddenly bright sunny days, i would suspect it is related to this....something to think about anyway.

It got down to 21 this year.
It's always sunny, though.
All the new growth this Spring is gone. Dead. Going to move it to a more shaded area, I hope it isn't totally dead.
