I recently recieved a full spore print, much thanks 6t, I am wondering though i know i use boiled water in the syringe but i need to know about how much i am supposed to put of the spores in a sryinge, or do i just use the whole print. I also have another question when i went to buy vermiculite home depot said they did not carry it anyomore due to health hazards from inhaling and they gave me perlite and said it was the exact same thing but now i am wondering can i make my cakes with it or is the vermiculite a must? thanks a lot NDL

for a 10 ml syringe, and an average size print, about 1/5 of the print will be more than plenty.

Perlite and vermiculite definitely are not the same. I have had some success using perlite in my jars, but not nearly as good as vermiculite. Scratch Home Depot, try an agriculture store... like a feed store or something like that... Look in your phone book under farming or farm supplies. Get vermiculite #1 grade, the big thick coarse stuff. Also, one time I was in a pinch for vermiculite, none of my 3 suppliers had it, so I grabbed a carboard box and cut it up into hundreds of little 1cm x 1cm squares. I used a little more cardboard then I would've vermiculite and when adding the water I misted it into the mix SLOWLY while mixing... This seemed to work quite well, better than perlite, probably as good as vermiculite.

Yup, perlite wicks water ( helps remove water ) and vermiculite retains water ( traps/absorbs water ).
You want vermiculite in your cake to keep as much water as possible without getting it soggy. Perlite is just not the same,, you'd use perlite in the bottom of your chamber to increase humidity for fruiting!
hope it helps!!

ps: i THINK just a small knife tip of spores in a shot glass for a 10ml syringe is lots! they are microscopic and a pin head has millions! so a knife tip is all you need. that print should produce many syringes.!

Use the spore print to innoculate a sterilized half pint jar filled with water. Then it's easy to make 5 or 6 more syringes. Perlite sucks for jjar use IMO. Look in the yellow pages under 'mulch'

My goldfish wonders how much of a spore print measuring 4cm in diameter he should use for a dark syringe? A light syringe? An easier way is, how many square centimeters? Also is a dark syringe really better?
