What does "spiritual" mean? Emotional?
    #1034453 - 11/08/02 01:35 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

This is sparked by something I just saw in OTD. I guess the subject just about sums it up. Does being "Spiritual" -but not in a "religious" sense- equate to being "emotional?"
What divinity can be found in "feeling?" What is "divine?" Do my chemicals fit the common definition?
This is from the perspective of man being a chemical machine, wondering about the nature of his chemicals.

What the fuck am I talking about?
Kind of vague, and stuff, but those are my thoughts of the moment. heh

Been there, done that.
None of those definitions actually define anything. Spirituality is concerned with the soul, the soul is the spiritual nature of humans. The rest is conjecture.

Here's where I'm at: "Consciousness," or "awareness," is an internal dialogue, a result of the human brain's language and memory capabilities. Anesthetize the corresponding areas of the brain, and these functions can be neutralized, while the patient remains "conscious" (though not really aware, as he won't form any memories during this period) and responsive.

I wonder, if the mind, one's very "being," resides in the functionality of these areas of the brain, what room is there for the divine? Well, I do think that's all pretty "divine," but not in the traditional religious sense, I guess. =p

Spiritual pertains to the transcendental aspect of human beinghood. It is the aspect of our being that is ontologically [of the nature of being or existence] closest to the Ground of Being, commonly referred to as God.

In human experience, the spiritual imbues our life with meaning. Part of that sense of meaning comes through meaningful coincidences, which Jungian psychology calls 'synchronicity,' and which theistic religions call 'miracles.' Meaning brings order, or, better yet, symmetry out of chaos. Like a magnet that orders a random smattering of iron filings on a sheet of paper, our spiritual center analogously orders, arranges, shows us a pattern or 'design' to our lives.

The idea of conversion or being twice-born (born again) means a radical shift from one's psychic center of identity - one's ego - to one's spiritual center, variously referred to as one's Spiritual Heart [to designate a center that is not the head, mind, thinking process, but a transpersonal, transcendental point wherein a Higher Awareness enters from], or one's Transcendental Self, or one's "Inner Man" (St. Paul's term).

There are different paths even within one's religious upbringing that are vehicles to this second birth. There is the path of devotion, which is emotional (singing, dancing, praising); there is the path of intellect, which is essentially contemplative and analytical; there is the path of action, which gets out and feeds the hungry or builds 'habitats for humanity.' Spirituality is never colorless, but is always tinged with some tradition, if only for the sake of having a common 'language' with which one can communicate to others. Purely individual, subjective experiences easily alienate one from everyone; do not have a consensus from tradition which might be millennia old to help one discern true from counterfeit spiritual experiences; and may easily degrade to eccentric, delusional perspectives and lead to ungrounded conclusions about Reality.

Yes, some of it is quite intriguing.
