if you are referring to the masking tape that is affixed over the innoculation holes in your jar lids, it should be in place before you sterilize. placing unsterile tape over a sterilized jar lid would be ill advised.

Actually it would be ill advised to tape the only air exchange holes on an airtight jar, and then place into a pressure cooker. Not smart! Definately leave the tape off the holes during sterilization, or jars will go boom!

I don't even tape the holes on my jars anymore(to much hassle, not enough gas exchange) No contams yet, and colonization speed is alot quicker. Once I inoculate my jars, I place them in sealed ziploack bags. Sems to work fine for me.

hehe. Lizard King, think about that. What's going to give first, the glass walls of the jar? Or a little piece of tape? If pressure builds up, the tape will let go before the jar blows. :smile:

I tape my jars during sterilization, it seems to keep some of the water out. I take the tape off afterwords. It doesn't seem to do much except keep out fresh air.

Well, I guess the tape would :smile:

But I was always told to never tape the holes before sterilization. I always put tinfoil over the tops of jars, then tape afterwards. I guess it really doesn't matter? Sorry to confuse you BommerZ, my fault.
