Growing multiple mushrooms in same chamber?
    #10295706 - 05/06/09 08:03 AM (14 years, 11 months ago)

I have a container that is filled with horse poo and already has small Panaeolus sprouting up everywhere. I also had a jar of EQ w/ straight brown rice that had completely staled out so I threw it in with the panaeolus in the horse poo. I don't know anything about growing multi mushrooms together, what are the odds that the EQ will produce anything along side the pans?

Don't know how much you added or anything like that, but if the pans were already fully colonized and pinning, it's likely that you won't see any EQ.

If you added it before colonization, and at a decent quantity like 1/3 of the pans or more you'd probably see a few pop up.

yea they were already pinning :frown:

does one form of mycelium just concur the other in that case or what?

most often the stronger one will take over.

I think it works sometimes though.

from what i've read they compete and one will overtake another. whichever wins out will be comprimised by wasting energy defending it self. there is an outrageously slim to none chance that mother nature will allow a hybrid to be created but, you'd have a better chance winning the lottery by finding a ticket not buying it.

however what you can do is a 1/2 and 1/2 substrate. you would mix the spawn and sub material seperately and put them in the same tray side by side and have 2 species fruit on the same sub only one on each side. :2cents:

i tried it recently with some leftover spawn and sub i had but, it got a little trich and i tossed it.

Just got done with my monotub doing exactly what your describing. The my tub finished it's first flush strong, if definitely took forever to fully colonize and when it was all said and done, the Golden Teachers beat out the Z-Strain. I'd say that some energy may have been used by the strains competing, but not all. More just time. Dry weight of the flush was about 23g dry. If you haven't combined them, I wouldn't, if you have, be patient! Expect the tub to take about 3-4 (maybe longer)weeks instead of 1-2 weeks.

strains dont compete with each other, the dont fight.

Im not sure about 2 different species, but im sure they would just live side by side, idk though

with 2 strains of the same species, they will either join if compatible, or grow and fruit seperatly not having the full benifit of the substrate.

Just because you only seen 1 type of mushroom, doesnt mean only 1 strain of mycelium grew.

alright thanks everyone for the wonderful information. I tried to remove all the little pins that were sprouting from the horse poo, then I removed any solid pieces that seemed to have mycelium fuss on them, broke down all of the horse poo and mixed in about 2cups gypsum and 2cups water and the substrate. Ill post pics if it produces any gold.

you dont need to remove pins when spawning to bulk.
