I just had to spray my place down for bugs... a few pics
    #10325338 - 05/12/09 01:08 AM (14 years, 9 months ago)

So I live in this building that was built in the 1870s. Needless to say it has more than it's fair share of problems. It's my first apartment, so whatever, I get what I chose.

If I don't spray for bugs every 2-3 months, the roaches and house centipedes start showing up with the fury. The other night I saw a roach crawling across my refrigerator... while I was tripping. Not fucking cool, I just sprayed not too long ago. I've never gotten angry during a trip before, but that did it, really pissed me off. Not a great feeling while tripping

So I decided today to spray for bugs. I hit the entire perimeter of my apartment with a VERY hardcore pesticide. If I don't wear some kind of mask while I'm spraying, my nose sting and burns, and runs like mad, and I cough, gag, etc. It's a hardcore pesticide that fucks up your world a bit, like I said.

Well, this old ass place happens to have a bunch of lead paint too, so I bought a respirator mask so that I could sand the paint and, you know, not go retarded from lead paint dust. So I wore that this time while I sprayed the pesticide. It worked alright. I still have a hardcore headache, with the respirator mask on, 20 minutes after I sprayed. After this post is done I'm going out for some fresh air and a cigarette Contradictory? Yes. Don't care.

Anyway. If you're wondering what I look like while spraying for bugs, or what a respirator mask looks like, here you go:

This is how I sprayed most of the place:

Eventually I had to add the headlamp, no clue where my flash light is at. Headlamp works just as well, if not better (I typically use it for night hikes):

Yes, I know my hair looks awesome in that pic. Don't have to tell me.

This is what I was using. Stuff will fuck your world up if you inhale it:

7 month control my ass!

Ugh, shitty. At my old place I had ants infest my room, they're this kind of ant that LOVE grease, I had some mcdonald's one night and I set my fries on the floor for 5 seconds, when I picked it back up it was covered in ants. I freaked out at that, and put down some traps and shit. Didn't have a problem after that.

I don't think I could stand fucking cockroaches though, those things are nasty!

I've never heard of an infestation of centipedes

That's what sucks about apartments. You spray for roaches, they move into another apartment... until they spray, and eventually the roaches wind up back in your apartment

Fuck, I just walked back in from smoking a cigarette and my nasal passages and respiratory lining started burning like a motherfucker. I had to put the respirator back on. This is a really shitty way to study for my Genetics final tomorrow.

Brugman: as far as your ant problem went, you should have done the same thing as I did. Insects tend to follow the perimeter of indoor spaces because it's a better way to avoid predators, they go less noticed. Thing is if you spray where they are walking, they lick their legs/feet often to clean them and ingest the poison. Works every time. Spray the perimeter and doorways and all insects are fucked. Pay particular attention to kitchen and bathroom areas. I fucking soaked both of them, lets see how those six-legged fuckers like that.

My main issues in this building are German and American cockroaches and house centipedes. Both scare the shit out of me when I run into them indoors... Outside it's no big deal. I just expect the place I sleep to be bug free. Now it will be.

House centipedes freak me out way worse than cockroaches do though. I mean, just look at these damn things:

Those things are creepy as fuck. And they hit like 2 inches long too. No bueno.

Ah HA!  thats what those are.  I did some spring cleaning and one of those things went scurrying about on my carpet.  Scared the shit out of me.  Looks quite alien.

Haha.

That shit is scary as a fuck, jesus.

I see a mouse or rat here one in awhile and get freaked out enough.  If I saw that thing in my house I would shoot it.

Good God.

Yeah. I had never seen one until I moved to the north east. I'm not squeemish when it comes to bugs, they mostly just piss me off when I find them in my house... But those things scared the shit out of me too. And they can bite!

Wikipedia says they are a useful pest though because they eat other household bugs. I don't give a fuck. They're still creepy and I'm gonna kill them.

theres a few precautions you should take when sanding lead based paint

The NSW EPA provides the following advice for removing lead-based paints:

- Assume your pre¬1970 home has been painted with lead¬based paint.

- Do not eat, drink or smoke where renovations are occurring.

- Wear a face mask (sold at hardware stores) and protective clothing such as overalls during paint removal.

- Pregnant women, children and pets should not be present in areas where lead¬based paint is being removed or where clean¬up is occurring. Keeping pets away is important because lead dust can collect in pet hair. Pets are hugged and cuddled by children and some pets sleep on children's beds.

- Tape plastic sheeting over floors before you commence work. Place plastic on the ground when renovating outdoors. Remember that leaded paint dust and scrapings can stay on the ground for a long time and can be harmful to children playing in these areas in future.

- Remove furnishings and light fittings from work areas. If this is not possible, cover them with plastic and tape.

- Removing paint by using a sander, sand blaster or blow torch will create hazardous dust and fumes. Dampen surfaces with a water bottle or wet cloth before sanding or scraping, or use a chemical stripper.

- Avoid using methylene chloride as a paint stripper. It is toxic and protection from fumes is difficult. Always follow the manufacturers' instructions.

- Try not to spread lead dust into clean areas of the house or yard. Remember to remove your work clothes and shoes when you leave the work area.

- When paint removal is completed, you should wrap and seal all waste such as paint chips and dust, rags, dusters and sandpaper in the plastic sheeting and place them in the garbage bin.

- Vacuum your carpets, window sills and skirting boards thoroughly after renovations. Professional carpet cleaning should be considered.

- After vacuuming, use a wet mop or rag to clean all hard surfaces, such as flooring, skirting boards and window sills. Do not empty the mop bucket directly onto a child's outside play area.

- Have a shower immediately after finishing work on renovations.

- Keep work clothes out of reach of children and living areas and wash them separately.

- As an alternative to removing lead¬based paint, you should consider sealing the wall with plaster board.

- In the past, lead dust may have built up in the soil where children play. Top¬ soiling, paving or grass¬turfing the bare soil may reduce the chance of children coming into contact with this lead.

- If you think that you have a problem with your soil, keep the lawn in good condition especially around heavily used areas, such as around taps and play equipment.
