You want to avoid fresh poo, you want nice aged poo.  If it smells like poo or ammonia it's not ready to use.  It basically just smells like dirt once it's ready to use for mushrooms so it doesn't smell bad.  If you're concerned or roommates have sensitive noses then break out the fabreeze before/after.

Personally, I try to get as many different bulk subs as I can and mix them together to provide a diverse diet.

I generally use this recipe:
18 gallon monotub filled to 20-22ish quarts of bulk sub up to about 5" deep.
1 brick coir (roughly 8 quarts)
2 quarts spent coffee grounds
1-2 quarts verm
4 quarts horse poo
4 quarts corn cob bedding
2 quarts gypsum
Then add 6 quarts worth of colonized grains or crumbled pf cakes or sometimes a mixture.

As for the fresh air / misting issue it's a tough one and there's alot of factors involved.

As far as mushrooms go cubes are pretty tolerant of high co2 levels however, how well they'll do under poor conditions will vary due to genetics.

Alot of these guys who have gob smacking wall to wall flushes using the make & forget setup have preselected isolates or clones that perform well under those conditions.

Getting the right balance of fae/humidity is pretty tough and using multispore grows you can get wildly varied results even using the same techniques/conditions/care.

I haven't advanced to the point where I'm ready to get into isolating/cloning yet (soon, soon :-D) but until then I'm sticking with lots of fresh air, light casing layers and misting to compensate for moisture loss.

Would I mix all of those ingredients up (excluding the spawn) and boil it in a bag to sterilize it?  Or sterilize them separately?

I can't vouch for pre-sterilized substrate bags. I don't have the experience. But shroomery sponsers are good news. Im pretty new myself but just did a monotub and its going really well.

The poo wont smell if you dry it out in the sun. It took me a lot of research to figure out how to make the right substrate, and Im a visual learner too. I find it really hard to retain words.

If you search for a thread called "all of RR's posts", you can find answers to random questions you have by searching within in the thread for key words that that poster has put next to each paragraph.

One method of learning on here is to find someone who is a trusted cultivator and follow what they do. Otherwise the info can be over saturating.

From what I've read: horse poo is better than cow poo. You need to dry it out to burn off the urine. Once dry, it can be crumbled and re-hydrated into a sub mix. It shouldnt smell more than earthy. Coir is a replacement for horse poo, and is also good. Some people use spent coffee grinds. If you look up my posts you can follow some things that I did, that worked me for me. And I also posted about substrates in other threads.

I used 2 parts coir, 1 part cow manure, 1 part vemiculite, 1/2 part gypsum and 1/2 part spent coffee grinds. My sub colonized very quick, but my first flush wasn't great. I think its technique rather than sub though.

RR's method of piling the field capacity substrate into quart jars and putting in a pot of water to pasteurize worked really well, and avoided a lot of mess. stick a meat thermometer into one of the jars to monitor the temp.

I use a big old crab pot to cook my subs in, works pretty well and since it's ALL I use it for, it's not very messy.

First I bring 5 quarts of water to boil then add my coffee, corn cob and a brick of coir.  Turn heat to low, let sit for 10 minutes.  Then I dump it into my monotub and put the lid on.

Meanwhile in another pot, I bring a mixture of rehydrated horse poo and corn cob up to 160f for 5-10 minutes then add it to the tub.

Takes about 8 hours to cool down enough to mix in my spawn, so I usually do them in the evening and add the spawn the next morning.

I do it this way because I do 2-4 tubs at a time generally.

When I'm done all I need to do is rinse out my pot and skillet and I'm done.

I don't use rr's method because, well, I don't feel like filling up 40 or 50 quart jars of poop/cob mix :-D
I can do 5-ish quarts at a time in my skillet.

They are cheap and big.

Thanks for asking these questions ezwider, I was still hazy on my upcoming monotub plan as well but this answered it all. Good luck with yours man.

My cousin had this cinnamon scented pinecones and had the brilliant idea to boil them in the crab pot one christmas (smelled great) but left pine sap glued to the inside of the pot.  Might as well be cement.

So now it's mycology only :-D

Mmmm I can smell it now.  How much do these pots run?  So I dont bag it all up together?  I don't bag it all?  Just throw each ingredient in there, cook it up, dump in tub, cook next ingredient, dump in tub?  That kind a thing?

Get all parts of bulk sub, hydrate it with hot water (180*F ish) then make sure it is around 170* for an hour (just check back in like 25 min, if it's cool, add hot water)

Then you just wait for it to cool (few hours), dump it in a tub (drain off or squeeze out excess water)  then you toss in your spawn and mix it up well.

You want to wait for the bulk sub to cool though right?  So that it doesnt kill your spawn?

So cooking everything at once is ok?
