Too much verm casing on BRF cakes causing suffocation and no success?
    #10319681 - 05/10/09 10:14 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

So, being an obsessive person, I decided that I would try to get really fancy casing my colonized BRF cakes.  Instead of just using a thin layer of coarse vermiculite, I put the vermiculite in the blender and turned it into a powder.  Then I rolled the cakes in the powder which stuck really, really well to them and completely covered them.  It has been 4 days now and nothing has happened at all.  I have a bad feeling about my casing plan.

Is is possible to suffocate colonized BRF cakes w/ too much casing?

Also, how rough can you be with the cakes?  For example, if the cake gets bruised from rubbing up against something, is it less likely to grow shrooms in that area?

I am thinking about soaking the cakes in water again to get the excess vermiculite off of them...

Thanks again!

its better to have bigger particles that allow mycelium to grow inbetween them, instead of a barrier, but it might just be taking more time.

No mycelium showing throught the casing layer tho?

Chances are YES. After you cased with vermiculite
mycellium should have grown slighly around the verm
after a couple of day,
If you can't see any mycellium through the verm then it sounds
like your suffocating it

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I was suffocating it.

Do you think there is still hope if I soak them in water again.  It has been like a week since I soaked them the first time.

Also for clarification, it the bruising of mycelium detrimental for mushroom growth in that particular area?

I would sterilize a butter knife and lightly
try to rub some verm off the sides

I may try that.  So resoaking is never a good idea?

Your cakes will still work fine. Just dunk again and fruit with solid verm. Its ok to do a thick layer on top. it worked good for my cakes.

Good to know...

If some of the mycelium is kind of bruised (or just beat up) in places where some of the old verm layer has now come off, will this affect those parts of the mycelium for future fruiting?

There's no need to dunk again so soon, you don't want to waterlog those babies.  But if you wanted you could rinse a few cakes under the faucet to get some verm off as you suggested, and compare their progress to the rest of the batch.

But ultimately I don't see a problem with a cake covered in super-fine verm.  I once had cakes that were completely covered with a thick layer of wet verm (sort of like a DEC but cased on all sides, and thick).  And they performed well, although delayed by some of the verm being colonized.

4 days in fruiting conditions is not a long time.  Maybe rinse the verm off of some of them, but give it a few more days.  do you see any white fuzzy mycelium?

Yeah, there is some coming through in places.  I will just wash them off and not soak them again.  I could swear I read that you were supposed to get some kind of growth in the first 5 days guaranteed or something was wrong.

Based on my intense layer of verm, what would you predict would be the normal time for some kind of activity to happen?  Thanks again!

I wouldn't mess with them at all, it sounds like they're doing fine.  Maybe you could rinse off 1 or 2 cakes for comparison sake, but let the rest do their thing.  If you can see some fluffy mycelium starting to poke through then activity has started.  Pins can take up to two weeks to form (sometimes longer), so you're just gonna have to wait it out.  Good luck, keep us updated.

Sorry for being persistent with my secondary question...

Does anyone know if bruising the mycelium, or just roughing up your BRF cakes in the early stages of fruiting (before pins have formed) will likely make the yield less?

Yeah, if you see mycelium comming through you should just let em grow.

You should be as delicate as possible with your cakes, but some minor bruising is nothing to worry about.  Your yield will not suffer.
