what are your thoughts on anti-depressants? are they just covering something up or helping put things in order?
also, how long do you think one should stay on it?

I stopped taking the stuff becuase it clouded my mind... I had trouble grasping words that I needed to say.. I hated it. It changed who I was. I think I was one of those people who didn't really need it.... If you need it, then take it.

Paxil fucked with my head hardcore. It had tons of side effects, and the main effect always felt real lame. Withdrawal was a bitch effects-wise. Dizziness and shit.

Yes, and yes.
I predict as our society becomes more and more depressing, more and more people will be on medication to 'function normally' in it.

i have some pretty mind-fucking depression... or i did until i got on medication, which has helped me alot.
i used to go in and out of serious depression holes like 6 or 7 times a day.. id be fine one minute, and then suddenly boom, id be in some sort of hell where nothing felt real
if anything i think anti-depressants have shown me that it that doesnt have to be my reality... but i still dont know how i feel about using them, though i feel great right now
i was on em before then i stopped because i felt unnatural taking it and like someone else said, had really dizzy withdrawls for a little while, then the depression came right back in the subtlest ways... strange how hard it is to view your mind objectively. cant see the changes taking place
well ive been back on it since the summer and i feel totally stable. and another thing ive accepted something called 'reality', which i know ive never accomplished before...
anyways, i feel like ive really put my thoughts and feelings on life in order, and am ready for whatever life throws at me... but i dont know if i should stop taking it or not.. well i wont worry about it right now,
but i could use some more input from you guys

I think if you can survive without it, don't. I was put on Paxil for a while and the withdrawals were HELL!

FIrst of all, erase the thought about covering up something, all is what they do is change brain chemistry. They helped me by allowing me to not get stuck in my bad thought patterns as much. And since I had more energy, and willingness to do things, I didn't dwell on the bad thoughts as much. The bad thoughts were still there, but I could deal with them easier, and look more at the good things in life.

I took prozac and wellbutrin about 4 yrs ago when I was 17/18... I don't think antidepressants ever did anything for me, I felt pretty much the same except I'd have weird sleeping pattern changes, strange dreams and...like...no sexual drive. I stopped taking pills and started smoking weed every day when I was 18, I think pot's done more to positively affect my mood than any pill ever did. I haven't felt truly depressed for a long time now. I guess antidepressants can really help some people but don't do a thing for others, just depends on your body.

I was on effexor but just got off it like a few weeks ago and that was pure hell. On the drug It did help with any anxity, depression i had at the time but the trade off was I was numb had showed no feelings at all. I lost a relationship cause i was so numb. So a warning to any who start meds to be prepared to be emotionaly numb. After i had quit the emotions were so overwealming im still dealing with em to this day. Depression is no fun I feel for anyone suffering with it like me.

I think antidepressants should go hand in hand with therapy, as they will help the symptoms, but when you stop the medication they will come back unless you have addressed your issues. I have read about lots of side effects stopping the medication, which can be reduced by tapering off. My mom has been on paxil for almost a year I think, but she doesn't go to therapy. I hint to her that maybe she should go, but I don't get in her face about it. Her doctor just says she has a serotonin imbalance. I think a lot of psychiatrists recommend staying on the medication for 6 months after finishing therapy.

I've been on Paxil for 2 years, and I've never had any problems with it. It's pretty muxh cleared up my anxiety and the slight bit of depression I had. I havn't been taken off Paxil, so I don't know that much about the withdrawl, but I do know that when I don't take it for a couple days I start to get a really tingly electric feeling.

Evil, Evil, Shit. Might as well prescribe Crack Cocaine (I'm not depressed, but I have seen what Paxil does to people. I think Marijuana is much better as a medicine.
