How the fuck would they misdiagnose depression vs schizophrenia?

Fuck if I know.. They misdiagnosed me about 5 times.. kept changing it.
How can they misdiagnose you ask? Because psychiatry is an infant field and they don't know SHIT about the human brain when they think they do. They just want to pump pills down your throat.
Schizophrenia, then Schizoaffective, then Bipolar, then Acute Depression with severe psychotic episodes.. then depression..
Then HEY turns out I was just a normal fucking depressed teenager from a fucked up childhood and the drugs didnt do shit except fuck with my brain chemistry and cause some seriously shitty side effects. Seriously the side effects on some of those drugs are worse than what they are treating...

Wapakz.. Zyprexa is the only one I can remember specifically

Side effects

As with all neuroleptic drugs, olanzapine can cause tardive dyskinesia and rare, but life-threatening, neuroleptic malignant syndrome.

Other recognised side effects may include:

    * Aggressiveness
    * akathisia inability to remain still[5]
    * dry mouth
    * dizziness
    * irritation
    * sedation
    * insomnia
    * urinary retention
    * orthostatic hypotension
    * weight gain (90% of users experience weight gain) (see below)
    * increased appetite
    * runny nose
    * low blood pressure
    * impaired judgment, thinking, and motor skills
    * impaired spatial orientation
    * impaired responses to senses
    * seizure
    * trouble swallowing
    * dental problems and discoloration of teeth
    * missed periods
    * problems with keeping body temperature regulated
    * apathy, lack of emotion

I had about 9 out of 10 of those side effects. They SERIOUSLY fucked me up.
And that was just with zyprexa.
They tried at least 15 different meds during the course of those psych visits over about 2 years.
Usually in combination with other meds, which made it even worse.

None of them did shit. Then I cured my depression myself, without them.

Lots of times they feel better because of the meds, but think that now that they are ok they dont need to take them anymore.  So they develop a cycle of taking meds, feeling better, stopping meds, feeling worse, and so on.

Oh man, it's like they took away everything that makes someone human and sold it in pill form.

Does anyone --doctor or not-- actually know how anti-psychotics work?

Yeah, they turn you into a fucking robot zombie with no capacity for emotion.
I was already apathetic as it was. Then magnify that by about a factor of 10.

I seriously have the deepest seated hatred for the entire field of psychiatry.
They don't know what the fuck they are doing most of the time.
It's just a wonderland for the pharmaceutical pushers to put you on a cocktail of expensive, mind-bending drugs.
They only care about $, not your mental health. Most of them anyway.

resperidone doesn't really effect me taht bad. It puts me out at night and that's what the reason they were using them for. I had weight gain but you get that with pills in general, well it's common.

i remember a pill for the racing thoughts. I think it is citolpram. It really lets you just pause your thoughts. That in itself made me trip out and think I was regulated for thoughts...

I havent had any messed up episodes for awhile now. It does come back whenever. I'm not a schizo tho, and whatever symptoms i get it something entirely different.

I can't speak for anyone else on the manner, but *I* for one, don't like taking my meds because I don't like to admit that there's anything wrong with me in the first place (or rather - nothing that I can't handle on my own anyhow) and I see my medication as a cop-out of some sort / and taking em is akin to me giving up on this world, and not even trying to deal with my problems any more

I mean - the symptoms still exist regardless how doped up you get anyway (the meds just make it easier to ignore that little voice in your head) and it's incredibly disempowering to think that you're not capable of ignoring those impulses on your own

'faithfully taking yer meds' (to me anyway) is like giving up on life all together  :tongue:

This is it. I have experience with 2 people who do this, and 1 other who "sort of does this."

I lived with a severe skitz who really lost it when he stopped taking his meds.

He thought the dog was bugged and spying on him, and drew a mindmap all over the walls about how key figures in hollywood were conspiring to do something..

Also threatened me and was going to call the police because he blew shit out of proportion regarding my use of drugs.

He also thought that clothes and random things fell through a portal in his roof and he wondered if there were portals in other houses and why the clothes were being offered to him. (we all knew they were the bags of clothes from old roommates which were stored under the porch.)

Another friend took too much acid in his late teens/early 20's and he's constantly on and off his meds. Sometimes he's functional and balanced and othertimes he's burning books and piling piled of popkorn kernals in weird places, or trying to balance pots on the heads of people watching movies...

Lastly, someone who experienced psychedelic psychosis was put on med's and stopped taking them, and continued using psychedelics and ended up in jail because of arson and attempted arson (and acting batshit crazy in many ways + smashing the sunroof of my car with a shovel...)

(i've written about these incidents here before...)

Skitz's definately think they "level out" with the med's and can maintain it. Then they stop the meds and their chemical imbalance strikes again and everything just goes to shit... Its very common.

My wife told me that her uncle's been talking to martians lately.

I'd imagine people don't like to take their meds because they don't like to feel like they're broken and need a pill just to be "normal".

I don't understand how taking a pill could be that bad.

Here's an idea for you, how about trying mustine chemotherapy? Mechlorethamine, rolls off the tongue nicely, how bad can it be? Well, so bad that nurses dispensing the capsules have to wear rubber gloves to prevent the skin on their fingertips from rotting.

Don't as a druggie assume that all pills are nice.

Me myself, I use an antipsychotic drug, the really big one - Haloperidol (Haldol), and have done so since 1988. My mind is too intense and my past too gruesome. I use it as a major tranquilizer - but in a relatively low dose. I use 2mg, once daily, a few hours before sleep so I won't be awake during the strong part of the effect.

In my youth I had many psychotic episodes. Not schizophrenia, reactive psychotic breaks brought about by extreme stress. Almost anyone who gets overstressed will get depressed. If you get tormented far beyond that point, psychosis is the only way out. I didn't have the kind of psychosis where one rants about CIA microphones in lightbulbs and alien conspiracies. I wasnt overcome by delusion, just completely caved in, exhausted but unable to have a second of rest in my mind. A completely terrorized, hypersensitive, exhausted young teen unable to rest or sleep.

When I was admitted to the psychiatric hospital for youths (where I was to stay 4 years) the psychiatrist said he'd do away with that psychosis right away. 15 mg of Haldol in 3 doses of 5mg. He shouldve fucking be dragged to Nuremberg to be tried there.

I thought, yay! drugs! Its a pill to calm you down right? Something like the benzos I had been given but STRONGER! I was all for it.

I took the first 5mg. Over the course of maybe an hour or so, every single thought in my mind ceased to be. I got completely dead inside. I slumped in a chair where I remained sitting from the early afternoon til bedtime, unable to think, unable to hold conversation.

I got cold, not my skin but inside. Then the shaking started, a tensing of the muscles with rapid tremling of arms and legs - absolutely dead inside and freezing. Not able to think, not able to speak, in a tunnel vision desperately holding on with all I had.

The bastards would give me two more of those before the day was out.

I was dead inside, unable to think or speak, limbs shaking, torso trembling, fingers and toes tensed. I developed dystonia. My neck muscles tensed, and tensed unevenly. My head was forced to look over my left shoulder, and I was unable to move my head any other way. If I wanted to look in front of me I had to move my entire body to look over my shoulder in the direction I needed look. Shaking, shuddering, dead inside, a 14yo kid in completely alien surroundings.

When they got it through to me it was bedtime I zombie-shuffled to what was to become my bed, didnt undress but lay down in the only position the dystonia allowed. They had thrown a fucking Promethazine in the mix and I was knocked the fuck out.

The next day I begged and cried and pleaded to the psychiatrist to please lower my dosage. It was without a doubt at least ten times worse than being psychotic. Psychosis then weas my natural state, Haldol was artificially enforced death. PURE TORTURE. And to think there are pills of that stuff containing 20mg a piece.

Does that answer your question? Its not a "chemical straight jacket", thats what it looks like to the nurses, from the outside. From the inside its more like Chemical Death. A human rights violation in pill form.

Its not a matter of just the hellish side effects, its also a matter of the desired effect. Most antipsychotics lower your Dopamine D2 transmission. Know what that is? Dopamine D2 contains a reward pathway that is what makes EVERY RECREATIONAL DRUG so pleasurable. Its what makes lifes finest moments so pleasurable. And you're knocking that dead with a pill, a pill that also can have hellish side effects.

Currently I use 2mg Haldol and have done so for many years. At that dose level, for a brain that has rewired to work with it, there are very little side effects other than a decrease in the flow of thoughts. As intensity of my mind combined with extreme external and internal stress were the triggers to psychosis, decreasing the intensity of my inner life with a low dose of Haldol in combination with leading a life deliberately as low in stress as it can be had, psychosis is no longer an issue - this at a dose of Haldol where the reward for me outweighs the negative effects.

If you are brought in with a psychotic break (for instance due to a ketamine binge) or if someone is schizophrenic, they will put you on 5-20mg of Haldol and keep you there for the rest of your life.

Can you imagine, having read all this, why people want off the meds?

To get with the times I tried Risperidone (Risperdal) one of them next generation atypical antipsychotics. No Sir, not for me. Theres sedation and restlessness, stuff I dont have with my 2mg Haldol. At my dosage level, the next generation stuff has more side effects plain and simple. Plus, they mess with your ability to trip or get high :wink:

They're messing with my dopamine, and it works. Hands off of my serotonin! I dont see a reason to mess with Dopamine AND Serotonin, when just dopamine does the trick for me anyway. All I really need from a med is a decrease in intensity of the mind, fortunately unlike schizophrenics its not the case that I actively have to suppress psychosis.
