About perlite ..

When using the wet perlite method to humidify your terrarium, how common is it to get water drops forming on the lid of your terrarium? I know it happens, I'm just wondering if it's really common.

I read that you can put a thin layer of vaseline on the lid to prevent water droplets from forming, but I don't really want to do this.. unless absolutely necessary. Any suggestions on how to prevent water drops from forming? Maybe using less water on the bottom.. say 1/4" of water in a 2" layer of perlite?

Oh one more thing about perlite.. When the FAQs suggest 1/2" of water in a 2" layer of perlite, does this mean a 1/2" thick puddle on the bottom of your terrarium?? Doesn't this promote contamination growth?

the vaseline isnt such a hot idea,,its doesnt work to well you still get smaller more numerous dropplets,,and alot of air born shit can stick to it,,,even with perlite a drip sheild it a good idea,,so that whan the dropplets do form they run off insted of dripping

and with the water in the perlite, just add some h2o2 to the water befor you dump it in the terrarium for the contams,,dont go over board

To infinity and beyond

It happens.
When you fan the mushrooms just shake the water off the lid.

I never used that much water in my perlite.
I would just make it moist and put it in.

If you use some hydrogen peroxide in the water that you soak the perlite in you won't get contams as easy.

I have this tiny fluro light on top of my terrarium to give the things light (obviously) but it also generates enough heat to prevent water condensing on the lid below where the light sits. maybe this is a stupid thing to do, and maybe i'm fucking up mushies with too much light, but I guess its one way to prevent drips.

If your mushies look happy then keep doing it.

I just birthed a couple cakes last night, and have them on about a 3/4" layer of prlite which I just put in a colander and moistened, no additional wateradded beyond that. I figure that this way i can add water easily enough if I think it's needed, whereas you can't easily get it out if it's too much. There's already condensation on the sides and saran wrap on top, even moving it into a cooler room to stimulate pinning.

Yeah it's been my extensive experience that water droplets won't hurt...  if anything they help...  Mushies growing outside endure rain and droplets falling from trees, some of them probably even get pissed on by birds...  Let your droplets form, let your droplets fall, let your mushies grow and eat them all.
