Feed Store, no rye berries
#10303629 - 05/07/09 05:17 PM (14 years, 10 months ago) |

Went to two feed stores today. Conversations went like this:
"Can I help you find something?"
"Rye berries, I'm looking for rye berries."
"What's that?"
"Rye... berries. Rye. Like rye bread? Only, whole grain."
"We don't have that. Does it have another name?"
"Rye something. It's not wheat or oats or anything, it's rye."
"We don't have that".
Sigh. So I got a small bag at the health food store for 84 cents a pound. I may end up mail ordering the stuff after all.
... and don't even ask about the Tyvek search.

Around here, they call it winter rye. I called the feed stores (too lazy to waste a trip on bunk) and asked them if they had any rye based feed. Only a moron would not know if they has something like that in their own store!

It's also called 'winter rye' or 'rye grain'. I think you can also use wheat grain. You can also use 'rye grass seed' but it's a bit more difficult to get the moisture level correct. Actually I think you can use just about any grass seed. Or you can use 'wild bird seed' or popcorn.

Yeah, I've been using WBS for years. But rye is better. Easier, too. I'd just like to get it at a better price.
I ended up ordering envelopes, too. Tried to find the Tyvek coveralls, no luck. Three big hardware stores, no Tyvek. "Breathable polypropylene", which sure doesn't sound like it would take PCing very well. Then I tried just walking into the PO and getting a few, but they didn't have them out.
You know it's federal crime to do anything with those envelopes besides mail things with them? I'm using my 10, then that's it- I'll mail order that too, if I have to.

Polypropylene is the same stuff that B&D syringes are made of that makes them PC'able. I use Breathable polypropylene as filters for my Jars, although I do use 2 layers, and secure with an elastic band.

84 cents a pound isn't bad and the tyvek well you can go to any new construction site and get there scarpe tyvek. There should be plenty to last a long time the construction rolls are 10'x100' so even if they had a six inch end piece it will last some time. CH

Organic rye berries can be found at health food stores, or by searching online for a distributor in your area if you're going to use a lot. RR

Rye can be found either at health stores, bulk food stores, and just about anywhere with "granary" in the title. Don't go for the big chains, look for the small local shops.

as someone has already mentioned...
in a Feed Store or a Grange, ask for Rye Grain...
and Winter Rye is what they would be selling this time of year.
Alot of Feed Stores aren't going to know what a Rye Berry is.

I ended up getting some at the health food store, like I said. But I was hoping to find one of those big bags you show in the video. I haven't given up yet, but I need to make some calls. Didn't think to call it 'Winter Rye', though I knew that. Still, you'd think with that two employees in two different stores, one of them would have said 'Oh, rye? Like winter rye?'
The other fun quest was verm. I have a local nursery that sells it in big bags, and Ace Hardware has the 8qt bags. But not Home Depot or Lowes. Go figure.

Not yet. I thought of that, though. There's a Sherwin Williams, and a local store, not too far from here. I'll check that another day. Or buy the polypro ones and see how that goes.
I just thought the whole thing with the feed stores was funny though. They didn't bother to ask me what I wanted 'em for, which was a bit disappointing. I was going to tell them all about biorecycling, growing oysters on newspaper and coffee grounds. Met a really nice cat, though. He followed me around the store and helped me browse.

Homebase and B&Q (that's the UK equivalent of Home Depot and Lowes) seem to have quit selling verm and perlite too. They say nobody knows what to do with it unless they are keen gardeners, so they stopped stocking it.

home depot sells tyvek rolls for 64$ its pretty expensive but its about 40 inches long and about 2.5 thick worth of tyvek which u will not run out of any time soon beats buying suits and destroying government envelopes which is also illegal not that we would care

Oh, I saw the rolls. But $64 is out of my range. And I don't think one of those would fit in my VW anyway.
And I do care about the PO too. In my other life, I use the Post Office almost every day. Huge respect for those folks, even if teh law wasn't involved.
But I did order ten envelopes, just to get going with Tyvek. I've been using polyfil, but I want to step up a bit.

tyvek is reusable - your 10 envelopes will give you about 250 jars if you cut them right, then you can reuse them over and over.
rye- whole foods, new frontiers, anything health food and overprices, should be listed under rye berries.
I hate rye, the store here is totally contaminated I get black mold EVERY time I do it, I even PC it for 90 mins at 15 psi... I stick with my WBS, granted it has its issues but not as bad as the local rye berries.
I just did 2 trays 12"x18"x3" today, soooo excited... too bad I cant look at it for 10-15 days...

can I store a tray in the fridge or just leave the lid on?
Im going to try to fruit them before I move which I should be able to do assuming a 15 day colonization time.

itll take about 1 week for full colonization then add a cpl days to give it a good hold maybe 2-3 is what i do and ive had very good pinning considering the conditions ive put my prs and crs through. so u could have it in the fc in 10 days then however long it takes for the pins to mature

BINGO!
I had the same issue finding rye grain, and I'm in a farming community. None of the feed stores have winter rye except well, in the winter (or fall) and it was not feed grade but for planting. When they did have it I had a terrible time getting it to work anyway so I gave up. They ALL however have feed grade whole wheat grains and it works excellent. 50lb for $9.00. Beats the hell out of the health food store IMO and works just as good - prepared exactly the same as rye.
The feed store also had the Tyvek suits. Not for painting only - think farmers and pesticide spraying.

To be honest I don't think there is one.

Winter Rye Seed is not always available at Feed stores because it is not used directly as feed. It’s used to plant pasture land or as a green manure cover crop. It is also not popular in every part of the country. Like mine. No dairy farms and only small cattle operations grazing mostly native grasses.
Some farm supplies, county farm cooperatives or Feed and Seed stores will carry it only during the planting seasons, late winter and early fall. You can usually ask them to order it for you with success
Grazing rye is another common name.

Oats contain soluble fibre. Won't that make it sticky like porridge?

Correct. Rye grass seed is something else. Rye grain, rye berries, winter rye, all the same.

Really? I got both from B&Q a couple of weeks back.
Is this really recent?

Maybe it's just my local one. It was a couple of months ago when I checked.

Yeah I went to homebase and B & Q, No perlite, no vermiculite, said they didnt stock it anymore.
Wilkinsons (hardware store) is currently selling 5 litres of perlite and vermiculite (either or, its not mixed together to clarify) for 1.50 pounds each. Or larger amounts can be bought on ebay for relativly cheap as its so light.

I get "rye grain" from my local feed store. They're in the grass section. I think Rye is technically a type of grass? Real cheap. Just get the biggest grains they got. 5 bucks for like fifteen pounds.

All cereal grains are grass.

I have recently found out that some grocery stores near me carry “Rye Berries” so call up a few of your local grocery stores if a nutrition store is too far away.

Which grocery stores did you find with them?

You gotta go look around. It's not a common thing, the typical store employee isn't even going to know. But I'd start at the places that have bulk bins. King Soopers is a local chain that has bulk rye. Hideously expensive, but they have it. Also Whole Foods has rye berries, if you have one of those around.
