making my own spore syringe
    #10293375 - 05/05/09 08:53 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

So im planning on making my own spore syirnge . Here are my plans...without getting to into detail. so i have a bunch of 1/4 pint jars and i figured i would sterlize on  of them and then put a mushroom cap in there and then take out afterone day. i also have a few older syringesfrom ralphster that i figuredi would put them in the pressure cooker  on  top of the jar and use them again. then take boiled water from inside a small jar and pour that into the jar with the spore print in it then shake and use like that...now tell me if you thin i should do thisn or should i justorder from ralphster..???

Sounds good.

See if you can suspend the cap, rather than putting it in the jar.
And if there's sterile water in there already, then you don't get spores sticking to the bottom of the jar.

Or... make prints, then use those for your syringes.

Never hurts to try man. Give it a go. Good luck. Let us know if it works.

Sounds good.  I might suggest putting a self-healing injection port on two of your jars, and pc'ing a jar with water inside, then extracting that sterile water with the syringe, injecting it into the jar with the print, give a shake, and extract.

You can make injection ports quite easily with high-temp RTV silicone.

Are you planning on throwing the whole print, foil and all in the jars?

You should suspend the cap over top of the jar that has the water in it. Sterility is key, do it outside if no glove box.

But without a glove box, i bet you'll get contams.

I would say order new syringes. Once you get a viable substrain, take a sample and make a Liquid Culture, and you never really HAVE to get spores again (damn fine idea though).

LCs start faster, as multispore can take up to two weeks to germinate, and bye then your jars are two weeks dryer than they could have been.

If you're really looking for a deal, get a professional spore print, make as-good-as-you-can glove/still air box, and do the basic technique for making a syringe.

You CAN reuse syringes though, just PC them.

The ability to make syringes is one of the foundational skill of this art.

Yes, it's nice not to have to- but do be able.

It will work if your careful. I have done it in a bathroom that was bleached in open air and got 100% success from the syringes, so if I can pull that off I know you can pull this off
