Early Pinning
    #1029108 - 11/06/02 05:21 PM (21 years, 4 months ago)

hello right now i have two trays of poo colonizing with straight verm casings and the casing layer is not very colonized and one of the trays is starting to pin but i think its to early so whats the deal, they havent been exposed to much light and temps and air exchange havent changed, so why is it starting to pin

You said they haven't been exposed to too much, well how much is too much? I had a tray of poo colonizing and just had aluminum foil on the top with holes poked in it, well that was enough air exchange and light to induce pinning. So it shouldn't have ANY light and little if any air exchange, if you use aluminum foil you don't need to poke holes in it since the foil doesn't seal the container.

so what the shit, what should i do? you didnt anwser my question.
i dont use tin foil i use foil baking trays with clear plastic lids and i just put them in my closet in a non-seethrough rubbermaid container with very little air exchange. so what should i do should i fruit the tray or leave it in the incubation stage until its fully colonized also should i pick the tiny pins.

I wouldn't think you'd want to pick a pin unless it aborts. Perhaps your humidity is too low.

You need more air exchange. Take the top of the container thats pinning and stick it in a box (sprayed down with lysol) and use an air conditioner filter (they only cost like a buck or two if ya don't have any extras, also spray it with lysol) and place the tray in the box, and the filter over the box to help keep out contaminants. Fan atleast 2 to 3 times a day, this should help greatly, and if you don't use the filter to keep out contaminants, just make sure to fan fan fan.

In reply to:

You need more air exchange.

Why? He doesn't want them to pin yet. The mycelium has not fully colonized the casing. Greater air exchange initiates further pinning.

Keep them in complete darkness. Raise the temp to the highest possible colonization temp for your strain without burning it up. Cover the container tightly and suck out all the air. Let it sit until it is colonized to your liking. Then put it in the light, drop the temp 10 degrees, and give it a good fanning. This should do the trick.

If it were me, I'd just let nature take it's course though.

Pluck the pins and put it back into incubation to finish colonizing.
