how important it humidity in the incubator. I have between 0-7%. Will this play any role in colonization time. If it has a negative effect what should I do?

In the incubator, humidity makes no difference.

Like Sts said, humidity doesn't matter all that much, but..... if its too dry it may dry out your jars. Thats why heating pads sometimes dry out jars when use in incubation. They give off a "dry" heat, where as using a fish tank heater in a jar of water will give off a "wetter" heat. What set up are you using for incubation?

I am using the fish tank heater incubator from pf tek for simple minds. Somebody else just wrote me saying they think my substrate sounds dry from how I described it. The mixture seems to move around instead of look like one cake. Like it would crumble to pieces if I were to take it out.

What ratio of water to verm to brf did you use when making your substrate?

I mixed 2/3 verm 1/4 brf 1/4 water. The water I added was hot. Will this make a difference? also, I mixed all this up in one bowl. The recipe times 6 (because I was going to first sterilyze 6 jars. There was so much extra it ended up being enough for 8 or 9 jars and I'm afraid this might have thrown off the ratio.

You're afraid the extra jars threw off the ratio? Thats not possible, a ratio is a ratio, know matter how you distribute it. How much of your substrate seems loose? And are you using a dry verm layer? I know that sometimes, some of the verm from the dry verm layer drops down because the cake shrinks as it is colonized.

It threw off the ratio because it was a ratio for 6 jars not 9. What I'm going to do is make a ratio for 6... fill 6 ... then dump the rest. The bowl I have won't fit much more than that without spilling. I have a dry verm layer. It's like the brf and wet verm are just hanging around and move about if I move the jar like their all dried out. I think they are too dry I may have to start over. Let me know though. I may just be impatient. IT's been 5 day and nothing but I've heard as long as 14. But that's if you mixed the substrate right (Which I didn't). Probably going to get more jars and try the above idea. any more ideas always welcome. thanks again for all the feedback.
