Sub too compact?
    #10279227 - 05/03/09 04:51 PM (14 years, 9 months ago)

If a sub of 15%hay, 85%hpoo were made too compact when spawning,
would the tub continue to colonise to about 90%?

I think the moisture is spot on, a lot of care was taken to ensure proper field capacity.

The tub has sat for about two weeks, and growth has seemingly slowed after about 90 percent.

Does it just need more time?
Or is the sub too compact for the mycelia to colonise the last bit?
At what day should i just say fuck it, lets get one flush out of this thing at least, and begin to fruit?

(roadkill talked about subs being too compact as a major cause of stalling)

You were supposed to use straw not hay.  That is why your sub is too compact.  I'm not sure what the correct answer is to your problem.  I would just ride it out for another while as long as growth continues.  If it completely stalled, I would cut the uncolonised substrate and fruit it.

I am not sure as I have never used so little straw. I have done many 50/50 straw/manure and you can compact the hell out of it and it will still be fine because the straw is so airy. I would venture to say, unless you tried to compact it, you are probably fine.

Compact substrates can definitely stall out - you want the substrate to be as 'airy' as possible; that's one big reason why we add vermiculite to horse manure.

You may also have a contaminant mold growing if your pasteurization was off.
