Pins on top of cake? weird
    #1028263 - 11/06/02 01:42 PM (22 years, 2 months ago)

has anyone experenced what looks like pinning on the top of the cake? I also have a few more pins growing out of the sides. They look like tiny white dots, like white bumps. Theres maybe 10 pins on the side and like 50 on the top. I dont mean the upper sides either, the top where they stick strait up, pointed at the lid of the rubbermaid. I also have mycellum thats light gray, but the same texture as the whiter patches. I doubt its dehydration since the container fogged up at one point till I fanned it out like I do at least twice a day.

Its too early to tell. right now the pins are the size of grains of sand, but they are all uniform. any chance it could be contam also? I always thought pins grew on the sides, but never the top

The cake to the right has most of the shrooms on the top, thats exactly what I have now but they are in pins. It just looked weird to me since there werent none a few hours ago and when I looked later I saw 50+ tiny white bump where the dry verm layer was, I removed it when I birthed the cake. Also there is less mycellum growth on the top, the sides are the thickest

Your cakes sound normal. I'd watch that grey mycelium if I were you.  :smirk:

yea those r nice cakes.!!!  Nice and thick stalks, nice length...that is one nice flush. I bet
ur easily looking at 100g fresh for each one.

Pins can appear anywhere. the sides, the bottom  the top.  I find that when i do get many pins,
not all of them get thick and fat.  some will while most will stay a lil thinner...any1 know why is that??
I keep the rH at 95+ and the temp around 72-76F and fann once , sometimes twice a day.
I aint the fanning i think.  When i dont fann as much in the first several days, i get alot of pins...
bit i cant get them to grow out to be thick and fat.

btW, i think pins growin from the top make a cake look way cooler, quite picturesque IMO

You answered your own question in this thread - yes, pinning at the top of the cake is fine.

Your real concern should be the grey mycelium.

Is it true cobweb mold is harmless to humans and easily defeated by mycellum? Since my cake is already colonized, what can cobweb do anyway? Green mold could be harmful to humans though and also destroys mycellum. Yea I ought to get a picture

are you saying those white bumps are gonna turn green? most people say these are pins. I could cut the top of the cake off before they become green

No, I'm saying the cake has a green tint to it, but it may just be the pic.

It doesnt have any green tint to me. maybe your monitor needs to be recalibrated. I just want to know what those white dots are. not what color the cake looks like, but those whitish bumps on the top. No one seems to know, since no one has seen anything like that before. man how weird

Looks like a serious case of cobweb mold to me.......I`d get that sucker out of the terrarium fast before it spreads
