Well, that's another great reason for a shotgun, you don't really have to be that good a shot- anything in the general area will work. As for as running out of ammo first, there's more TV imagery. If you are in the same room as somebody else, and both of you are shooting, running out of ammo isn't really likely.

Though if you have armed individuals breaking into your home, I'd say a better use for your money would be a U-Haul.

i think you underestimate the chances of running out of 5-7 rounds.  it may not be likely and one of you may run and escape before it happens, but it can happen.  if you get trapped in a bathroom or another room away from your ammo, and the intruder is dead set on killing you now, you had better make your remaining rounds count. there is nothing fictitious about a scared and adrenaline amped up homeowner missing his target even with a shotgun.  especially if he was just awoken from a dead sleep and his eyes and senses are still adjusting.

and theres no telling when an armed individual will choose your home as a target, especially in the worsening economic times, people are desperate and they will do anything to make some cash.  neighborhoods that are thought to be safe are always being targeted, you dont have to live in a shithole to be unlucky enough to have a van full of armed thieves pick your house next.

are you kidding? walls are usually made of thin gyprock,  3, 9 or 100 projectiles fired from a shotugn will all have a better chance at hitting an unintended target than one round from a pistol...

but that being said, I would grab my 12 before a 9 any day of the week

forgot to add an answer for the poster:smilingpuppy:

you want a cheap shotgun to defend your home ?  get a remington 870 or a mossberg 500 dual barrel package

you want a pistol?  get a glock 9mm or .45, I would never buy one myself but many claim they work well...

want to hunt or target shoot? get a tikka 3 or remington 700 in .308 and up

:nonono:

Shotguns are safer indoors... BULLETS go straight through at high speed and have high PENETRATION. Shotgun blasts slow down quickly, spread out and have less PENETRATION ability.

Some members here have learned about, trained with, and handled firearms professionally. Other learned about guns on TV, or from their Uncle Dad.

Go with the pros.

I would think someone spouting out model numbers and calibre sizes would know something simple like penetration.

And the click-clack rack of a pump shotty has been shown to make people flee... armed or not. Nobody wants to be on the wrong end of a shotgun, and that sound is universally recognized... and respected. :smirk:

Agreed.
Best way to use a firearm is to never discharge it.

Back in the day, it was my job to be such a fierce warrior that the Soviet Union would never dare to invade Western Europe.

"Mission Accomplished" I think is the phrase?

I've been target shooting and hunting since the age of 11, I have also bought and fired a few of the models I suggested, I did a lot of research before making my decisions and i'm passing on some good advice to the poster... you two butt buddies should either prove my statements are false or stfu.

OK OK... take a chill pill there Dirty Harry... I just know some people who "know" guns without ever firing them, and you sound like them.

"racking your bitch loudly will just give away your position, noobs"

That sounds like video game advice, not real world home defense advice.

Also, assuming a bullet is safer than buckshot indoors because there is only one projectile? C'mon... a bullet may end up 2 houses away through 4 walls.

I'm always dosed on the chill pill so no worries,  racking a shotty qickly and loudly will give away ones position away which is not always a good thing, what if the attacker has a firearm?  he/she would know exactly where you're positioned which is no good.

a pistol round, depending on what caliber, might end up penetrating quite a few walls before loosing kenetic evergy which is the same case with buckshot, both are freakin lethal to a human but buckshot increases the probability of hits by the # of projectiles it has stored up in that little plastic shell.
