Phoenix Oysters ....
    #10278132 - 05/03/09 12:56 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

This will be my growlog for my Phoenix Oyster blocks and Ill update it as things progress. Mods, I originally posted this in the growlog section but have been told that Phoenix oysters dont form clusters like other oyster species, but instead form individual fruits. Due to this advice I need to ask the forum some questions and I wanted to post this here. If you want to delete the other thread since its a duplicate certainly feel free.

So heres what I have going guys .... if Phoenix oysters dont form clusters, does that mean that I shouldnt be fruiting them from holes in the bucket and sacks as seen below? I suppose I could always remove the lid from the bucket and unwrap the blocks from the sack so they are completely exposed. Any input here would be great.

I have 2 blocks and 1 bucket in total of this species that just got put into the greenhouse today. The first one pictured Im not sure about. It has been MOSTLY colonized ... as in ... when I look at the block it is fully colonized for the most part (with the exception of the edges that have dried out) but its somewhat whispy and not near as thick as some of the other blocks. In my experience, this might point to contamination but there is none I can see so I put it in the FC anyway to see what will happen.

These two look much better to me, although I suspect they will all be fine even the top block. One bucket of wheat straw and then a bag with paper products as a substrate (shredded office paper, papwer towels, cardboard, used coffee filters and grinds).

One quart of grain spawn was used to spawn the bucket and the paper block. The wheat straw bag pictured first that Im wondering about I used some colonized paper. That could be why it seems to not have colonized as well.

Yea, they liked to pin all over the place wherever they can get fresh air. see if they fruit out of the holes, but they might not. This is probably because it was my first grow

Here is a link to show them clustering and pinning out of holes:

hmmm ... well those certainly look like they are clustering for the most part. At least the holes I have cut look like they will be sufficient.

..... and - it looks like the block where he cut a single hole in it did the best?

Will do, it looks like things will be just fine the way I have them set up... and I believe its better to let them fruit from the bags anyway to avoid drying out.

I guess we'll see!

Well ... I had it at 1.5 minutes on 10 minutes off and it was about perfect all last week. Today though it was getting warm and I turned on the air. Holy shit did it mess things up for me... Ive had to bump it up to about 3 minutes every 10 to keep it up around 98%.

I really wish they made a humidistate that had a probe and could be adjusted to kick the outlet on when humidity dropped below a certain level.

I would buy one in a heart beat. All the ones Ive seen only are adjustable up to 80%.

Anyone know of one that goes up to 90 or 95% or so?

You would think a easy to locate humidistat would be on the market. I don't know of one though or i'd have one. I need to get my phoenix on agar.. then onto LC..

My last laundry basket grow of Phoenix Oysters formed clusters out the ying-yang with neglect that almost required social services to be called.

You should have clusters popping all over your buckets and bags.

Well, my phoenix oysters are pinning up a storm!

I have one straw bag, one straw bucket, and one paper bag. The paper bag is pinning up a storm and the bucket is pinning less, but with much more size.

So I look a little closer at the bag, and there are some nice clusters coming out the holes I cut .. BUT there are TONS of pins underneath the plastic everywhere that couldnt get out. Theres no way I could have cut holes everywhere so I decided to just cut the bag off entirely and put it in the greenhouse. I hope this will be ok. My RH is pegged at 99% with 4 full air exchanges per hour.

I didnt know what else to do there was a TON of them as you can see in the pics here. They are all deformed right now but I bet they will come around now that they are exposed to fresh air.

I guess we will see!

Heres the bucket .. it has a few other clusters on the other side like this:

And heres the paper product bag before I took it out of the bag:

...... and here is after I stripped the bag:

Here you can see some of the many, many pins that wouldnt have developed had I kept it in the bag:

What do you guys think.... bad move taking it out of the bag????

Maybe you could put some vermiculite on it like a cake? At least that should help with moisture retention

I think taking it out of the bag was a good move. You'll get prettier fruits this way

Well, there not doing so hot due to lack of FAE.

The bucket had a nice cluster I thought I would get to harvest ... and now it looks like its trying to pin off of the fruits! ??  WTF lol ...

I Have humidity at above 95% at all times, and closer to 100% according to my human hair hygrometer.

So I now that this is because of lack of air flow. I guess maybe I need to put a coolmist in there or something to add more FAE because having the ultrasonic running isnt doing it and Ild really rather not cut holes in the greenhouse. Maybe thats the best way though? These have not dropped spores btw not that I know of .... they just started pinning off themselves.

Yes they did that a lot. They fruited MUCH better after I got a coolmist for them

Otherwise they lacked FAE and pinned everywhere

Well, looks like I pretty much messed up my first batch of oysters.

I just tonight unzipped the greenhouse as mentioned in my king oyster thread. I unzipped it half way up the GH and turned the timer up on the ultrasonic to blow more increasing RH and further increasing FAE.

Some of them seem to want to turn out but for the most part they are all LEG!! Bummer.. on my next batch, Im going to use ALL buckets like that, and then unzip the zippers all the way to the top and leave it like that. The RH will probably drop to 80-90% but they should be ok since they are in buckets and the substrate itself wont dry out.

Then theres this HUGE TUMOR looking thing on the block... the weirdest thing is ... its all mushroom tissue! lol ... weird.

Man ..... you guys arent shitting when you say they need LOTS OF FAE!! Holy cow ...

Heres the GH trying to rock, the block on the top shelf is a black poplar block that hasnt pinned yet.

OOOHHH yaaaa ...

I unzipped the zippers to the greenhouse half way up and turned up the ultrasonic timer last night .. today, overnight the oysters have WAY bigger caps.

They will still turn out leggy but I have it dialed in now, and Im betting my king oysters will turn out pimp!

Ill get some pics tomorrow or something ...

That 'tumor' is a coral formation. Oysters require so much FAE, I've actually had those develop in fully colonized rye jars I left sitting on my patio to fruit directly from the grains.

ALready ate some this morning and just now (mushrooms, not the tumor) lol

This morning:

3 eggs whipped with some skim milk, lots of mozzerella cheese, ham, and sharp chedder cheese.

Sauteed the mushrooms in olive oil with garlic salt, and some cracked pepper with a dash of seasoning salt. Put the stems inside the omelet with the fried ham, and mozzerella, topped it with sharp chedder and the caps from the osyters. Pretty good!

Tonight, brown rice mixed with sauteed oysters as above and mixed with grilled chicken.

Equally as good. Its neat to walk down to the basement and pick off a handfull of fresh mushrooms to eat within minutes.

and
nw_shroomy trades AA or lions mane for ABC's phoenix oyster, which was purchased from sporeworks

That makes sense, I think.

Not kidding, finished my M.S. in engineering less than a year ago,  took my GRE and plan to go back for by PhD as soon as my current loans are paid off.

looks like thats next year!

havent decided what I want to go for, possibly biochem, doubtful that I want to do engineering but pharmacology and pharmakinetics are high on the list

Heres some nice mature fruits that came off the straw bucket as well. I found them at the bottom of the greenhouse, they must have grown out the back between the shelves and dislodged when I removed it...... I guess lol

.... and my breakfast this morning ..... scrambled eggs with a couple handfuls of these phoenix oysters and a sliced up red bell pepper off of one of my bell pepper plants (one of the Toilet Garden Refugees SEE HERE) all tossed in a pan and sauteed up in olive oil, garlic salt, and some crushed red pepper. Served with a slice of homemade oatmeal wheat bread I made myself and a glass of milk.

YUUUMMM

I really, really like the taste of these mushrooms. I have never had them before but they are really good!

Oysters are one of the very few edible mushrooms I'll eat.
I hate Agaricus mushrooms etc but oysters are always great.
