Coir & PC questions.
    #10273811 - 05/02/09 03:12 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

#1. I was tight on money and got a pretty shitty PC. It's a 4L and can only hold one quart haha. Would it be the same, about 1/2 inch water, on high until steam and then turn it low for 90 minutes for each jar?

#2. I have everything for a coir substrate except for the vermiculite. How great are the benefits to adding vermiculite w/ the coir substrate? I can get it, but it's less money to spend if I don't necessarily need to.

use the pc just the same.

verm will add alot of moisture to your sub and will help fluff up it up, i would say it would work w/o verm but the addition will boost performance a great deal. if you can get any coffee grinds they will compensate for coirs nitrogen deffiency. also mixing gypsum into it will add calcium and sulphate, it will help stop the sub mix going claggy too.

these little additions really improve the projects performance, well worth a few extra quid.

You don't need to sterilize coir. Pasteurize it:
Bring water to 170-180*F
Put coir in the water and cover.
Add hot water if temp drops below 140*F.
Keep the temp in the 140-160 range for an hour and a half.
Last, let it cool before spawning.

Yes, add coffee. It's free at starbucks, McDonalds, etc. Just ask for it for your garden.

Verm would probably help but isn't necessary. I've seen 100% coir work many times.
