Mushrooms (Pan Subbs and others)
    #10270669 - 05/01/09 08:53 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

Went for a walk today on some abandoned railroad tracks. Saw some mushrooms on the walk due to all the past rain. ID's aren't exactly required since I won't eat any. Just putting these up for fun.

Found this bird protecting it's eggs. Reminded me of a bird I saw in Idaho who faked a limp to lure predators away from its nest. For some reason they nest on trails though. :nonono: I'm blanking on its name though.

Telling me to back off :hehehe:

Shot this also and strung it together today:

That first one is Polyporus arcularius, second is Coprinellus micaceus.  Third could be Melanoleuca, we need some microscopy on this one.  Nice bird.

The bird it reminded me of is a killdeer(Charadrius vociferus). :awesome:

I'm pretty sure they're the same actually, though their strategies of defence were obviously different. Kind of interesting that in different areas the birds could have different strategies. Could this be that it's not instinct and is learned? I'd guess probably not though.

Here's a video of a killdeer faking an injury:

Though the bird's act to draw away predators in this video is also different than the ones I encountered in Idaho. It is much more obvious by positioning its wings in an odd way. The killdeer in Idaho just made false attempts to fly and would walk dangerously close and walk with a limp.

Bump. Took these pictures less than an hour ago.

I was surprised to see something like this in Dallas. A nice surprise of course. :tongue2:

A spore print is in the process.

It has been really humid here the last few days, though I've never really heard of people finding actives this far in land.

Hope you enjoy the pics. :bigblunt:

The spore print for the dung lover is black. I assume it's probably some kind of inactive panaleous?

That's cool. I was pretty interested with those orange/red mushrooms third picture down. But they were really tiny and I couldn't find any other around them growing. They were growing out of wood chips. I doubt that's enough info to guess as what they are though.

Bump. Here's a bunch more pictures. Pretty sure I found some Pan Subbs. Taking spore prints now.

Found this one growing a few inches away. Pretty sure it's the same kind...

Can you spot the mushrooms?!?

I see you have a keen eye.

I found these today growing out of lawns. I believe they're pan subbs. I saw some blades of grass below them that had what looked like black spores on them...

Does this look like salvia apiana to you guys??? I thought it only grew in southern california... I think it's most likely some kind of artemesia. Maybe Artemesia ludoviciana.

I know in The Pub you said the prints were black, but those don't look like subbs to me. Subbs tend to have a much more robust/beefy stem than that.

The difference between foen and subb prints can be subtle if you haven't seen both. Here's a comparison picture I made a few years back:

Yeah the prints are definitely jet-black. But the stems are definitely noticeably thin. And looking at the wikipedia for panaeolus cinctulus, it does appear that they have pretty meat stems which these do not... So I assume that these are yet another inactive species of panaeolus?

The strange thing is that my friend told me that his friend was finding active panaeolus in the same area (specifically the same lawns). Either we must have just gotten unlucky, or the foaf has little experience, OR it's another kind of active panaeolus besides cyanescan or subbalteus, possibly new...but I highly doubt that.

My friend currently has some, though I'm not sure when he intends to consume them. I warned him that they may give him bad shits...

If they do happen to be active, could they possibly be Panaeolus sphinctrinus?

Cool! Good to hear, it would make more sense of the situation.

I've started a cardboard spawn from the specimens.

I can't really notice any obvious bruising though. If I look close enough I can maybe convince myself of some bruising, but it's not obvious enough that I would believe it. It's most likely spots of spores...

I can get more pictures if needed. It was present in small clumps of some grass. I noticed in some of those clusters there were small mushrooms growing as well.

I found a lone panaeolus today. I thought it may have been antillarum since the cap was more of a white, rather than tan brown with cracks like the other subbs we had been finding. It possibly could be because of shade though? After picking it I noticed that the gills were obviously brown. I assumed it was a pan foen. but I went ahead and printed it.

I was kind of surprised that the print wasn't a more brownish black. Here's a picture showing it's spore print in comparison to what I am assuming is cinctulus.

It looks possibly a little brown in that photo, though that is probably because I had a short depth of field, because indoor lighting is a bitch with Nikons. Here's some pictures of the subbs and their prints:

unless your camera is throwing the color off, none of those are prints of subbs.

Panaeolus are so god damn hard to ID. Those prints LOOK black to me, but I really couldn't tell you unless you get a picture of them in direct sunlight with a good camera (yours seems good). Direct sunlight is the best way to assure true color with most cameras.

What state did you say you were in? They could be Panaeolus castaneifolius, which are active. The best way to look for bluing on Pans is to VERY lightly bruise the white mycelium at the base and look for bluing.

Due to the yellowish stems of Pans and the low psilocybin content, bluing is usually very difficult to observe.

After picking literally hundreds to thousands, I have just a few pics of where you can kinda see it. Here ya go...

It's really more of a green-grey with thes ones:

You can see it on the base of this one:

You really have to know what to look for with the bluing in subbs because it's so subtle. In this pic the one in the upper left hand corner is showing some "bluing" in the middle portion of the stem. To the untrained eye you'd probably never notice it:
[/url]
See how it just bearly has a blue-green tint to it?

Also, if you want some examples of what Pan subbs look like, take a look at my gallery here:

Indoor lighting isn't good for natural color. I can assure you that it is jet black. :smirk:

And yeah, I know what to look for with very mild bluing. I used to have to do that for gymnopilus I found.

So any idea what kind of panaeolus this could be? The cap is quite differentiated from all my other finds. I'll try to see if I can find more today and take habitat shots.

The spore print is jet black for the lighter capped mushroom. The picture is not accurate color wise. If you notice the paper it is sitting on almost has a brown tint. That paper should be true white.

I found another panaeolus today that also had brown gills. It was among a cluster of what I have been assuming is subbalteus. I think it may be that the younger specimens have a more brown tint to the gills. I'm printing the other specimen to see if it's jet black as well.

If you have the capability you should look at the spores under a scope.

Roughened spores = Panaeolina, Smooth spores = Panaeolus.

The only exception I know of is slightly roughened black spores ='s Panaeolus olivaceus.

more spores = more saturation.  Coffee is always lighter colored in a glass.  Your print will appear darker in some places, because it is.  The light cannot penetrate the thicker areas, making the print appear lighter or darker in areas.

With a black spore print, the light has less effect, because the spores are already darker.

Even in the thin parts it appears pretty black and no tint of brown. I'll take some pictures at the recommended exposure, I never pay much attention to it at this point.

A good way to tell the color of the print would be to use a black and a brown marker and draw a line with each next to the print.

Then compare. It also helps when taking pictures of prints. That way even if the color is off, the black and brown marks will help determine how off the color in the photo really is.

I give up trying to convince you guys. :emocry:

I made a spore solution with some Karo syrup and water and sprayed a bunch of lawns in my area. Hopefully a few of the spores will germinate. It did rain pretty hard last night and this morning.

Definitely black. I didn't doubt it before though since I saw the sharpie vs print test done. Cameras and lighting can be tricky. Especially when it comes to showing slight bluing.

If you have any of those prints left :pm: me.

I'm in the DFW area of Texas also. Starting on May 1st, I picked over a pound (wet), of Pan Subbs over the course of 13 days. They were all in nice grass. The stems were mostly thin like yours. I've never picked shrooms before. They are quite potent. Everyone says they are weaker than Cubes... but I swear I trip harder of these things than I ever have on cubes. 3-4 grams is all you need for an intense trip. I still have about a dry ounce left. Nice finds.

Being new, please consider this a jackasses attempt to be a stallion. First off, I can be a bit color blind with orange and yellow, but that looks absolutely jet jet black to me. I don't see so much as a hint of brown, but who knows, maybe I'm just color blind to a shade of brown, that I just can't see. Also, I've been led to believe 1 characteristic of subbs is the non linear or wavyness to the fiber of the stem, where as Panaeolina foenisecii would generally have more straight fiber. Running in a straight line up & down. I really don't wanna be so presumpturous to challenge what Rockefeller says, that person is a fungi guru in my book, only in some pictures example 1 and example 2
the stems appear to be wavy or "twist" please forgive my bad terminology. I came to this forum to learn, and I usually do so through asking questions (in this case small details). So, the door for criticism is wide open. How far off base am I? :foreheadslap:

I'm mostly waiting right now. There's lots of pins that are not yet big enough to pick. Also a friend pulled a shroom directly out of the ground and a tiny pin came out with it and turned a deep blue. Later on the pin dried out to a black. They're popping up all over the place.

Most of what I'm finding is this size now. I'm just waiting for them to reach full maturity. I misted them this morning to give the mycelium a little boost, and help the mushrooms withstand the Texas sun.

*EDIT: Found some ripe ones. :sun:

These are all kinda old, but I never showed them anyways.
All these had jet black spore prints:

I haven't found much lately, maybe because of the heat. I did find one growing out of my lawn though.
