summer grow. gonnna be hot. no AC. any tips?
    #10250406 - 04/28/09 04:12 PM (14 years, 9 months ago)

i cannot afford an AC. (probably not)
can i still make a grow work in 80-90 deg weather?
humidity will def not be a problem thats for sure.
mainly concerned about incubation temps. if it might be too HIGH for the jars....i know the warmer it is the more of a risk for contams.
i will also  be using the steam sterilization method. i cant afford a PC right now either.

first time grower just looking for a few tips from those who have grown medicinal mushrooms or cubes in a hot climate.
-cheers

An incubator could be used to keep out the heat, too.
Open it at night, close it during the day. Not ideal, but maybe ok.

Or... find a little mini-fridge, and jimmy the thermostat so it maintains 75 instead of 40?

Steam sterilization is ok for PF cakes, not so good for grains. But you can find a PC for cheap if you are lucky- check thrift stores, yard sales, etc.

hmm...
i was thinking mabey a dark clean cabinet would be a little cooler. i guess i need to get a thermometer. just trying to do this as low  cost as possible. a mini fridge is out of the question. mabey just get an AC then.

found a few PC's at local thrift stores. all were out of order. old, used up, and not functional. one looked good but it had no seal. bah. just ended up buying a huge enamel pot for like 5 bucks. opted for RR's LGM (steam) pf tek method.
thanks RR!
the supplies and equip. were actually WAY harder to come by than everyone says (at least where i am at) and having no car doesnt help.
thanks for the advice though.
appreciate it.

Oh, yeah- a car is a help.
But I did my first grow without one. Lucky enough to have a Goodwill and a Wal-Mart in walking distance. PC parts are available online at pretty reasonable prices.

Definitely get a min/max thermometer- you'll need one anyway, and it will give you some idea what conditions you are working with.

I doubt a cupboard inside the house would be cooler, but could you get under the house?

Well frankly the first time I ever grew cubes I just boiled the jars in a large pot with the lid on. Did it for about an hour and a half and it worked great. Not a single jar got contaminated.

However since I bought a PC I will never go back to doing that.

As far as keeping it cool, I'm assuming you live down south and don't have a basement which sucks. Trial and error, just start some and see where it goes. Use a thermometer and place it different places in your house (Closet's ect.) and find the lowest temp. area midday when its as hot as can be.

no i dont have a basement to  use.  good idea. that would def.  work. except most  basements are really moldy anyways. but then again i bet the cubes  would love it too. hmmm.....
thanks for the input!

Anywhere low to the ground, but for sure keep it off direct contact of course, maybe a crawl in space?(if you can keep everything sterile)

hmmmmm, thats a predicament.....I know most people dont agree with doing this but maybe you and a close friend that you trust with an air conditioned place could work on em together.

due to the sun position duaring daytime, side of the house facing south gonna stay a little bit warmer then a side facing north, tho im not 100 sure about that as in the summers sun is higher up,good luck!

Y'know, those little window AC units aren't that expensive, and don't cost too much to run as long as you aren't trying to refrigerate your home. That might be the simplest and most direct solution.

All winter we get threads on how to heat a grow area and all summer we get threads on how to cool one.  Search your terms and you'll find all sorts of tricks, such as laying a damp towel over your FC and blowing a fan on it.  That alone will drop the temp by ten degrees.

There's also some good tips at http://www.energyconservationinfo.org/summer2007.pdf for regulating your inside temps without AC and minimizing heat buildup.

Yesterday i bought for 4 bucks a nifty digital thermometer/hygrometer that tells you the minimum and maximums from the past 24 hours. Really great.

I'd say to open all your windows at night and close them and the shades during the day.

Digital hygrometers are great while they last. Then they aren't. For real, get an analog one also.

maybe try to find some strains that do better in higher heat.

and avoid B+... they seem to deform a lot when above about 70...

Maybe get into cacti?

More relevantly, I'd try things like RR posted with the damp towel, they would tend to work the best because people have done it with good results so many times.
