At what point...

In your opinion, when is contamination most likely to occur? I just lost a dozen jars due to cobweb, even though I thought I was being careful throughout.

I made syringes & needles (new sterile) myself from prints which I took myself. The prints were made on glossy card, although I will be doing them on foil from now on. The syringes & needles were new unused, and in their original packaging + I did sterilise the needle anyway.

I mixed the substrate in a large metal bowl which was pre-sterilised using Milton sterilising fluid and boiling water. When the Jars were filled they were sealed and submerged in water which was boiled for about 30 mins. (I think that this is probably my weak point, as I don't have a pressure cooker) The substrate I used was 50/50 BRF and Crushed Rye Grain.

The jars were then innoculated through needle holes in the top. Which were then covered with clingfilm. They were then placed in the boiler cupboard where it is a steady 24 degrees C.

Any advice? As I am running out of prints, and I'm trying to get a crop for Christmas

i never messed with making syringes yet. but i think the weak point may be boiling crushed rye grain for only 30 minutes. my understanding is that whole grains (i.e., not powdered) require pressue cooking or fractional sterilization (boil, cool, boil). another thing: you shouldn't submerge your jars when boiling.

I dont think you can use any kind fo grains without a Pressure cooker, and if your boiling BRF jars, it should be more like an hour, not 30 mins.
