The religious myth is one of man's greatest and most significant achievements, giving him the security and inner strength not to be crushed by the monstrousness of the universe.

What I left behind me was the best I could make it. What lies ahead is the chance to do better. That’s all there is. – Clive Barker

Success is fucking up on your own terms. – Guillermo del Toro
I am a man of fixed and unbending principles, the first of which is to be flexible at all times. – Senator Everett Dirkson
[The human being] experiences himself... as something separated from the rest — a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. – Albert Einstein
We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. – T. S. Eliot
We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are. – Kahlil Gibran Even in a time of elephantine vanity and greed, one never has to look far to see the campfires of gentle people. – Garrison Keillor

Nice one. Reminds me of Becker:
"The great boon of repression is that it makes it possible to live decisively in an overwhelmingly miraculous and incomprehensible world, a world so full of beauty, majesty, and terror that if animals perceived it all they would be paralyzed to act. ... What would the average man (sic) do with a full consciousness of absurdity? He has fashioned his character for the precise purpose of putting it between himself and the facts of life; it is his special tour-de-force that allows him to ignore incongruities, to nourish himself on impossibilities, to thrive on blindness. He accomplishes thereby a peculiarly human victory: the ability to be smug about terror." Ernest Becker

"For what is a sense of the banality of something if not a defense against the overwhelming power of that thing experienced freshly? Banality depends on memory, as do irony and abstraction and boredom, three other defenses the educated mind deploys against experience so that it can get through the day without being continually, exhaustingly astonished." - Michael Pollan

Well, in Einstein's case, his theory of General Relativity was very heavily influenced by Riemann and Minkowski. He was exaggerating a bit, but I don't think he was kidding.

He wasn't kidding, and its extra awesome because it applies to everybody. Think about it. Can you remember every source for every bit of information that you know? Every person's knowledge is amalgamated from tidbits of this and that, over such a long time that almost nobody can remember exactly how they know most of the things that they know. Since future creative thought can be influenced by any of these bits of knowledge, it is often quite easy to hide one's sources because the process is automatic, and we are generally unconscious to it.

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”

I realize that if I were stable, prudent and static; I'd live in death. Therefore I accept confusion, uncertainty, fear and emotional ups and downs; because that's the price I'm willing to pay for a fluid, perplexed and exciting life.
