In attempting to perpetuate things long past their natural life span, we live at the expense of a greater harmony and contentment. If we include loss in our philosophy of life at all, it is only as tragedy or error, for which we blame anyone or anything. So grief catches us by surprise when it rudely interrupts our ideal world. Our emotional well-being fluctuates with each scratch and dent in life. Our grief is partially a self-righteous resentment of the laws of the universe. Our longing to recover what is lost is an indication of how little we attune to the rhythms of nature.

A reflection on what truth is in the human sciences must not try to reflect itself out of the tradition whose binding force it has recognized. Hence in its own work it must endeavor to acquire as much historical self- transparency as possible. In its concern to understand the universe of understanding better than seems possible under the modern scientific notion of cognition, it has to try to establish a new relation to the concepts which it uses. It must be aware of the fact that its own understanding and interpretation are not constructions based on principles, but the furthering of an event that goes far back. Hence it will not be able to use its concepts unquestioningly, but will have to take over whatever features of the original meaning of its concepts have come down to.

"I have spoken as if our attention were wholly determined by neural conditions. I believe that the array of things we can attend to is so determined. No object can catch our attention except by the neural machinery. But the amount of the attention which an object receives after it has caught our attention is another question. It often takes effort to keep mind upon it. We feel that we can make more or less of the effort as we choose. If this feeling be not deceptive, if our effort be a spiritual force, and an indeterminate one, then of course it contributes coequally with the cerebral conditions to the result. Though it introduce no new idea, it will deepen and prolong the stay in consciousness of innumerable ideas which else would fade more quickly away." --William James

The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, answered: "Man.... Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived."

Living is not hard, but dying is very difficult to face. With identity, attachment, ideology, ect being rooted in a sense of self, we often struggle and fight against losing such. If we would but let go and allow things to be just the way they are, peace of mind and contentment would follow.

"All my life I've been harassed by questions: Why is something this way and not another? How do you account for that? This rage to understand, to fill in the blanks, only makes life more banal. If we could only find the courage to leave our destiny to chance, to accept the fundamental mystery of our lives, then we might be closer to the sort of happiness that comes with innocence." --Luis Buñuel

This truly makes me wonder. Not to go into victim mode, or shift blame, but when all you have ever known is disillusion and disappointment, you start to feel like an emotional leper. Did I hurt others in a past life? All I want is to love others, but it's all for naught. Some people will never accept your love.
"He who fears he shall suffer, already suffers what he fears." - Michel de Montaigne
A related quote that I recently heard. It definitely resonates with me, as I feel that my pain is, in some ways, my very essence. Sensitivity can be a gift if you can accept it's challenges. Then again, maybe I am just a fool masochist.

Ordinary people seem not to realize that those who really apply themselves in the right way to philosophy are directly and of their own accord preparing themselves for dying and death. If this is true, and they have actually been looking forward to death all their lives, it would of course be absurd to be troubled when the thing comes for which they have so long been preparing and looking forward. —Socrates

Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not. --Jac O'keeffe
